Hello everyone. Just wondering if anyone else has suffered from reflux on taking Risedronate. I take one a week, and have now been put on Opremzole to help subside the reflux. Is anyone else taking the same medications as me, and if so how are you feeling after taking them. Thank you so much for reading this.

Side effect of reflux with Risedronate.

It is a shame you take Risedronate and as a result have to take a PPI because of reflux . Unfortunately taking omeprazole for any length of time may weaken bones.
Hi sorry to hear you are suffering with reflux.
PPI medications are not a good option for people with Osteoporosis because they can cause further bone loss.
I actually was reccomended by the Hospital and my doctor to take Gaviscon advance, I find this works quite well and is safe to take.
I have a hiaitus hernia and know how miserable reflux can make you feel.
Perhaps you can just have a short time on the Omprazole and then see if you can manage your symtoms with the Gaviscon advance.
Reflux is a fairly common side effect of bisphosphonates, but taking omeprazole (a PPI - proton pump inhibitor) to counteract it seems counterproductive, as PPIs taken long-term can cause bone-thinning. An alternative would be to have a bisphosphonate injection or infusion, which bypasses the digestive system so is far less likely to cause digestive side-effects. There are some other options too, including raloxifene, teriparatide and HRT, as well as not taking meds at all, depending on your age and the severity of your osteoporosis. The nurses on the Royal Osteoporosis Society helpline are very informed and helpful: theros.org.uk.
