Hi all ,hope you all started the new year better than I have ,wishing the best to you all ,27 Dec started with nasty virus ,and everything that goes with ,nasty chest infection (not covid ),although I am feeling better temperature ect gone ,I saw my chest nurse tonight in gp surgery because feeling very breathless and chest still full of mucus prescribed more of the dreaded steroids, we also spoke about oxygen weather it is time for me to start thinking about it ,to be honest I have been thinking about it for a while now as I am really not coping with my breathing,my last FVI was 29%, I ask her how will I no that I need oxygen, she advised I buy a oximetre I think that she called it that ,it is the small device they put on your finger,if I've got this right she said if my readings keep dropping below 90 signs are I may need oxygen, can anyone recommend a good make of oximeter ,wishing you all a healthy new year Alice

I simply got mine from Amazon. Have had a couple over the years and been satisfied with them. Otherwise your chemist probably sells them.

Am surprised by your nurses comments. If oxygen is being considered then really you should be referred to specialist team for that. They can carry out necessary tests such as walking test and blood gases test to identify if oxygen is required.

Hope the chest infection clears soon.

Thank you Bevvy ,I am under chest consultant ,like many others I haven't seen her in two years although I did have a telephone oppiontment about six months ago ,we didn't discuss oxygen, I think I will ring her secretary to see if I can get another phone oppiontment

I just looked at mine and there is no make on it. Like Bevvy, I bought mine on Amazon.

My oximeter is from Amazon The make is ZYON. Had it ages and still working great. You have to .have blood taken from wrist and tests with the oxygen nurse at Hospital before you are put on oxygen.. I was put on oxygen for 16hrs a day .I went for a check up at hospital 6months later and was pleasantly surprised that I was able to come off the oxygen as my levels had improved. I still go for check ups and I still have the oxygen at home . I use it every morning whilst bathing as helps me not to get out of breath . I feel at ease that it is here if required which means I dont panic. Hope you get sorted.

One of My Respiratory nurses came to my house after I phoned . It was Lockdown but he called to see me. I had to walk up and down my lounge but my oxygen dropped to 72. He called back the next day and took blood from my ear and tested it. The oxygen nurse Katrina was off work with covid. He spoke to her and I had oxygen delivered next day. It was months before I was allowed into hospital for tests I knew my mobility had gone downhill as was shielding. This caused me to be more breathless. I was determined to get my mobility back so excercise around my house and walking around my decking in garden. I was like someone from the film Twice around the Daffodils. You had to do this to be discharged from hospital in the film. For me it was getting more rounds in every day. I started to gain my strength back and my oxygen levels started to rise. .when I went to the hospital I was walking down the corridor and my oxygen was 94 when they checked it, taking blood from my wrist .Hope you can improve yours .take care and stay Positive. Concentrate on what you can do not what you cant. xxSheila 👍💕

I havent had to use it for almost a year. But I had the flu jab in October and have had a cough since. Has got gradually worse and funny you asked but I had a bad night last night and my oxygen level dropped to low 80's I put the oxygen on and it's up to 97 with it on but once I take it off it drops. I have started my emergency pack Amoxillin and steroids and will phone my Respiratory team tomorrow. They will call and check me over. Thank goodness I had the oxygen as saved me calling 999. It's a blessing having it on hand but surprised ihave to use it again. Only have it on a few hours ,its mostly to protect your organs from damage. xxSheila 💕💕

Thanks Sheila, I hear another like yourself on here saying about there respiratory team ,I'm in north wales ,I did ask at glan clwyd hospital about a respiratory team they didn't seem to know what I was talking about wondering if every hospital has a respiratory team

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to Alice70

I live in South Wales Alice The Respiratory team work with your Consultant at the hospital. They also operate from a premises outside of hospital. Only one or two work in the hospital with the Consultant but all are in direct contact with him or her..I can telephone my team between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday. If they are all out on home visits I leave a message and they always return my call ..They have regular Patients they call on daily who need help with more serious conditions like Pulmonary Fibrosis. I have severe COPD but usually manage very well albeit at a slower pace than I used to ,but that I have got used. I count myself very fortunate as My Team are fantastic and call to see me if ever I need them. I have not seen my GP for years as they dont know anything. The Respiratory team can change medicine etc and even e.mail the GP if I get problems with them changing my prescription. They are a God send. They also run the Pulmonary Rehab 6 week courses. I am feeling 100% better this morning as been on oxygen all night slept all night, no coughing and oxygen level up. It puts my mind at rest having it to hand even though I dont use it only to bath usually. This flare up I have had I would have panicked and called ambulance for oxygen but I havent done that for over 3yrs now. I used to suffer terrible panic attacks through health anxiety but these I dont have anymore. The oxygen at hand is like a comfort blanket. I thought they would take it away when I was told I dont need it anymore, but The lovely gentleman from the supplier said once you get it you keep it. They also pay for any oxygen I use by paying my electric company direct. Hope I've explained it to you but you have to be assessed for oxygen as some patients are not suitable. Good luck and hope you can contact your Respiritory Team. Try your Consultants Secretary.

Keep safe and try not to worry as this can cause health anxiety and panic attacks . xxSheila 💕💕

I know hiw frightening it can be Alice. If you need any help please ask me I have learned a lot since my diagnosis 2010. My Consultant always tells me when we get my spirometry test results. They are only a bunch of figures and some patients with far better lung function than me are in wheelchairs on 24/7 and given in

I take the Positive outlook and it works. My team always compliment as I make the effort to put my make up on and do my hair and dress up daily, gives you a lift. I am 77yrs old and manage ok

I do take supplements from Organic Burst all natural and no additives. I take .Turmeric, Baobab, Chlorella, Spirulina also 3000 Vit D spray inside cheek. Daily.

My excercise is walking around shopping centres to get my steps in not going to the Gym. Lol.💪💪🙌 I stop and rest if feeling out of breath and walk at a steady pace not rushing. Always remembering to breathe properly. Dont hold your breath as causes heart rate to increase and panick attack. In slowly through nose hold it, out slowly through mouth with pursed lips slowly. SMELL THE ROSES, BLOW OUT THE CANDLE. You can use this to climb the stairs. Breathe in on first step hold it , out on third ,and so on .dont rush and you'll make it up the stairs in one without struggling to breathe after some practice.

Hope this helps.

Sending hugs xxSheila 💕💕👍🤞

On my shopping trip .

I have a Nonin Go2 oximeter. I’ve had it several years and it’s still going well. I’ve checked it against the one my respiratory nurse used and it was accurate. I was prescribed oxygen after I did a six minute walk test at home under the guidance of a nurse on the phone. My sats dropped to 88 and I was referred for an oxygen assessment the following week and received my oxygen the next day. Good luck.xxx

I too got my oxymeter from Amazon. I have no real idea how accurate it is, except that its pulse readings more or less match my blood pressure machine's. I depend on it to tell me whether my oxygen level are going up or down. These days you can get them with kite marks on, which suggests they ought to be reasonably accurate.

Hello AliceI have Pulmonary Fibrosis (Sarcoidosis) I also have a oximetre . With regards to Oxygen, after seeing my consultant for the first time over 2 years ago she prescribed oxygen by way of a Concentrator supplied by BOC the service is first class any problems they come out within 24 hours.

An Oxymetre is great but it just tells you what your number is. I live alone and I have to try and keep on top of situations, speak with your Consultant if you have the opportunity regarding Oxygen . I wish you all the very best, take care in these difficult times.
