Update, Coils rather than Valves?????

More news from my Res. Consultant, she says "the LVR will not be possible after looking at my scan. However she will send all my reports to the Royal Brompton, to see if they would consider" COILS !" rather than" valves"!

Obviously I haven't a clue what this is all about! has anyone else heard of this? I would really appreciate any input. Thank you

Hi Woofly

I am sure the procedure will be explained to you, on Royal Brompton page under heading Treatments, coils are mentioned ;

rbht.nhs.uk/our-services/lu...

A couple more links for you regarding the coils:

nice.org.uk/guidance/ipg517

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Hope the information is of help.

Best wishes BK

Coils are an alternative to valves, the placement is slightly more complicated than that with valves but with the same objective in mind.Normaly valves are not inserted if you have positive collateral ventilation and/or there are not disitnct intact fissures that seperate the lobes of your lungs as they will not work.

Some consutants do not like to use coils as they are difficult to either reseat or remove if required but i am sure your consultant will explain all this to you if you care to ask.

Good luck whatever treatment option is offered.

Ski's and Scruff's :)

Thank you so much for the info. What a clever lot of people there on here offering advice, help, and encouragement.

Woofly i had a vested interest to learn more about them given that i have 6 valves currently residing in my upper left lobe. :)

Oh Wow! no wonder you know so much, did you improve after the op.? in other words, can you breath more easily now?

Unfortunately they haven't worked for me,they are intended to deprive air to the affected lobe but allow spent air to come back up the airway, depriving air to the affected lobe is supposed to achieve a state of atelectasis or in laymans terms a collape of the targeted area as it withers and dies away but in my case this has never happened so i have recieved no gain from the procedure but to put your mind at rest most people do achieve the desired result and they can expect to achieve a far better lung function and quality of life. :)

Hi Woofly, Whatever you have it is progress. I had 4 Valves in my Lower right Lung, I would have them again, unfortunately my Consultant has told me last week that my Deterioration of my Lungs would not warrant them. I would encourage anyone going forward with any Procedure Offered to them. Good Luck . You have now been given Good info Links from Bkin, and Skischool. Best wishes. C. XXX

That sucks Carolina - is there any chance the placement of the first 4 valves caused the deterioration in your lungs? Just wondering as looking at all the procedures at the moment x

Maybe? I did ask Amy, but of course, we are all here to try things on their Recommendations. I Literally Begged for another valve Procedure, It wasn't to be. Lungs too scared, I have To accept their Professionalism. I would Recommend anyone to go for it if offered. xxx

Thank you Carolina - I agree we still have to try things if we are eligible, as any improvement is a step forward, rather than the usual steps backward. Take care x
