A very harrowing story, the stuff of nightmares.

As some of you know we do not watch broadcast television anymore, preferring to spend what would be the licence fee on the, cheaper, internet streaming channels Netflix and Amazon Prime, as we already have a fast internet connection. By using a VPN we can access the US services as well. Last night we watched a movie, a true story, about the chemical giant Dupont and their product know as Teflon, the non stick coating on cooking pans. The movie is out in the UK cinemas next week, on Friday. It is called "Dark Waters".

So harrowing was the story, that I had to look for the story on the Internet and I have found it in "The New York Times Magazine"

‘‘PFOA’’ has been used as a water repellent in many items, carpets, furniture, clothing, floor wax, dental floss even food wrapping paper it is found everywhere.

I have, as an African Grey parrot owner, I know about the dangers, to them, of any fumes given off by non-stick pans that get burnt from boiling dry, but did not know just why, now I know. So maybe it is a warning for all of us to take notice of, " don't burn your non-stick pans". I shudder that so many people have been living with this poisonous "forever chemcal", that once it enters your body it will remain there, forever.

98% of all animals and humans throughout the planet are now contaminated with ‘‘PFOA’’. It is as bad, if not worse, than DDT ever was.

To my mind there is little between Dupont and the Tobacco industry with their "profit before health" business models.

It also makes me think about how many other similar examples are out there, that have yet to come to light.

Must confess I haven't read the whole story. BElieve I saw something about this company on TV. Its incredible what they were getting away with - in.dental floss, of all things! No wonder that tribes survive without our hospitals and medicines, they are not being polluted like we are!

Sometimes the dangers are revealed after the products are introduced, I know I have used spray on water repellents without knowing the danger.

And as for DDT , we used that with abandon before the dangers were broadcast.

Smokeless fuel was produced in a factory near me , and dioxin spread through the air and water system.

And I forgot the lotion I was given by my gp when I caught scabies, .....it’s now banned. I often wondered about the effect on my health .

We are finding out more and more how our everyday lives are contaminated in so many ways using regular kitchen items and others. Plastic is another thing we should be alarmed about Many of my storage containers are made of plastic but now there is concern about their safety. I am in the process of changing over to glass containers after reading the latest information. It is mind boggling to say the least and very worrying.

Thanks for sharing this latest information with us.

There was something on radio about Teflon recently but nothing like this article. I had one nonstick pan and it started to wear away . It was the greatest thing for many years but i bought aluminium pans then i heard this hcaused health problems so i bought stainless steel pans .Now that is losing its coating.

Lots of chemicals have been used for years have been found dangerous. When i worked in a laboratory we used lots of chemicals, stains etc that were found to be dangerous and the senior in each dept had to go through a list of these and had to find an alternative that would be acceptable. These were the COSH ( Hazardous Substances ) regs . One was for the kitchen cleaner we used at times . This was a printout 5/ 6 foot long and you had to wear "protective clothing" to use it . This was the same kitchen cleaner that i used to clean my bath every morning .! How many more do we use every day ----until somebody finds them hazardous. How do you define too hazardous to use.
