Good Consultant In S. Devon?

As perhaps you have seen in my previous posts, I am not coping very well at the moment. I finally got an appointment with the respiratory nurse at the hospital, I asked her if there was anything at all I could try. She replied, "no" just carry on with the oxygen, I have never had a consultation with a Consultant, I asked her if would be possible, she said there was no reason to refer me. Bear in mind I have never had a consultation, or a CT or MRI scan. Why is it that some people do and some don't?

A lot of you recommended that I saw a consultant, so my question is, can anyone recommend a GOOD!! Lung consultant in the S. Devon area please. I know I will have to pay, but I feel I should at least try everything.

I cannot believe you haven’t seen a consultant! It’s not on. I would complain to the practice manager at your GP surgery. I’ve done that before over a different matter with good results. I put my complaint in writing. I’ve seen a consultant in Exeter (NHS) several times and had two CT scans. You shouldn’t have to pay.

Thank you Lynneypin for you comments, I agree I have been sorely let down by the people I have seen so far. I most certainly will see a lung specialist asap. Its good to get the encouragement from fellow members to carry on battling, I was starting to think I was expecting too much.

It isn’t you who isn’t coping. It is your useless GP and so called respiratory nurse who are not managing your condition properly. In that and on refusing to refer you to a consultant they are failing in their duty of care towards you. When you find a good consultant in your area - and you definitely shouldn’t have to pay, take the name to your GP and insist on a referral. Your GP has no right to refuse. If they try to refuse send a strongly worded letter to the practice manager and begin the complaints process. I have recently had to do this after 20 positive years at my surgery. Boy did it concentrate minds !

Littlepom, Your remark about my useless GP and so called respiratory nurse really made me giggle! it is exactly how I feel towards them. After all the kind and informative advice I have received on the forum, I will by hook or by crook, get to see a consultant. Thank you again.

Good for you. Go for it. I'm afraid that we have to be vociferous and very pro active in our own interests.x

The worrying thing about not seeing a consultant and not having any scans etc is that you dont really know what disease you have, so how can they treat you properly. I would take Littlepoms advice and look up names at your hospital and insist they refer you, it is your health they are messing with and you have a right to be treated with care, let us know how you get on x

In sorry to hear your plight. I from the US and I dont understand the lack of care you all have in other countries or is it lack of a heart.

I couldn't take no for an answer is seek another source as my life is at stake.

Suggest you contact your gp & really lay it on. You don’t have to be rude but probably firm . You should of course have an appt with a chest specialist, the nurse is wrong. Problem is if you pay to see consultant all the tests might have to be paid for as well unless your dr is understanding & the consultant tells them what tests are needed, good luck & don’t give up. xx
