spirometry results

my recent lung tests show FEV1 1.14 45% predicted

FVC 1.93 64% predicted

Have been told I have end stage copd Just how bad are these results. dont understand them at all

Hi I agree. 45% lung function puts you just at the top of the severe stage. End stage (not really called that now as people can live many years with it at that level) is 30% or below. x

WOT?! It's as Hoobs says, you are just a little way into 'severe'.

If I were you I would go to see whoever told you this, armed with the correct classification and ask why the hell they misinformed you in this way. I'll try to find the link but if I dont, then Im sure Stone-uk will post it. It's not fair that ill-informed/ignorant medics alarm their patients by giving them fake information in this way.

Need actual copy of the results and information put in correctly for the calculation to be accurate.

By my reckoning, fev1 divided by fvc times 100 = FEV1 59%, right in the middle of stage 2 !

Fev/FVC ratio indicates obstructive or restrictive condition. Below 70% indicates obstructive

What is the GOLD Staging System?

Many doctors use more than one way to determine your COPD stage. One common way to measure COPD stages and severity is with the GOLD staging system. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease or GOLD came up with the GOLD system. The GOLD system uses your forced expiratory volume (FEV1) test from your pulmonary function test to categorize the severity of your COPD into stages. Simply put, FEV1 means the amount of air you can forcefully exhale in 1 second. As the severity of COPD progresses, the stage number shows how airflow is limited.

What are the GOLD COPD Stages?

GOLD COPD Stages

Simply put, the GOLD COPD stages break down into 4 total stages. Over time, COPD symptoms will worsen, and the stage numbers will increase.

Stage 1: Very mild COPD with a FEV1 about 80 percent or more of normal.

Stage 2: Moderate COPD with a FEV1 between 50 and 80 percent of normal.

Stage 3: Severe emphysema with FEV1 between 30 and 50 percent of normal.

Stage 4: Very severe COPD with a lower FEV1 than Stage 3, or those with Stage 3 FEV1 and low blood oxygen level.
