Hi all. I was just wondering which antibiotics are best for chest infections. Doxycycline or clarythromycin. Thanks. I'm allergic to penicillin.

Hi

Although they both cover a wider spectrum, it seems Clarithromycin is more suited for respitory infection.

What is clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that fights bacteria in your body.

Clarithromycin is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections affecting the skin and respiratory system.

Clarithromycin is also used together with other medicines to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.

What is doxycycline?

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body.

Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as acne, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, eye infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.

Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. It will not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.

Some forms of doxycycline are used to prevent malaria, to treat anthrax, or to treat infections caused by mites, ticks, or lice.

Thanks for your input.

I have been taking my usual COPD rescue meds as quite poorly but this time the meds are making me sick. As I take prednisilone 5 mg. every day for maintenance I think it must be the doxycycline although took it happily in the past but a long while ago. GP has now prescribed clarithromycin but I will hold off for a few days as my sats have come up from 73 to 89/90.

I've been told by my resp consultant who is totally marvellous and very experienced that Clarithromycin is the best for chest and sinus infections, my experience is that's right. Ive had lots of different abs and the ones which work best and fastest is Clarithromycin by far.

Good if your allergic to penicillin too. Few dodgy side effects but if you can bear with that it's worth it.
