Sputum Culture

I have just received a letter back from my sputum test today through which medical team trying to get to the cause of this cough I've had for over a year now. The sputum test says i have two bugs and need an antibiotic course GP prescribed Amoxicillin again I took a course at the start of this and did no good and again this course helped a little but I still have my cough. It said on letter from hospital that 2 bugs are causing it but hasn't named them which I'd prefer to know what they are. Obviously I'm not being given the stronger antibiotic it takes to rid these wee blitters for good.

Have any of you any ideas what they could be. I've never had a cold or flu to cause a cough it wakes me through the nigh so I keep a cough bottle beside my bed and it eases enough to let me sleep again.

I have had lots of tests carried out peak flow..inhaler.. puliminary breathing test..chest xrays..and lastly sputum test which came up with 2 bugs.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Maureen

Hi, there. I don't know what bugs you have but I did have a GP who always prescribed Amoxicillin. In the end I had to get tough and say that it never worked for me and I could not see how it saved money. He had said it was the cheapest and they had to save money where they could but i pointed out that giving me 2 weeks of that, before one that worked, not only extended my infection it also wasted money on antibiotics that were never going to work for me. He took it on board and now I have Doxycycline as my emergency go to. Time for some assertive speaking, I think.

I've nearly finished my 5th course of amoxicillin one after another the last 3 being a bumper dose 6 daily 63 tablets in just over 10 days and symptom still with me.

It sounds like time to stand firm.

I had a GP who insisted on changing the antibiotics in my rescue pack from Doxycycline to Amoxicillin. I had to take these but they had no effect .After 4 days I called out a GP who immediately sent me to A and E who took blood samples and then gave Doxycycline. The bug I had was resistant to Amoxicillin I ended up in hospital for a week last Christmas. So as Christmas approached this year Ive been paranoid about getting an infection.

Amoxil gets an uncalled for bad press in my opinion. For example if someone had step p, as long as it wasn't resistant to amox then it could well do the trick.

Saying that however if the hospital states you have 2 bacterium, it is more than likely that one of them at least would be a gram negative and amox would not be of any use. I can't understand why your GP didn't contact microbiology to check out what bacteria you cultured and what it was sensiive to.

Amongst all the tests you have had, I wonder if you have had a scan.

Please 'phone the surgery before they close for Christmas.

Good luck.

don't know what type of bug you have.....might want to check for this ....my find is its more common than we think and not know it. Chlamydia pneumonia bacteria infection. With this a blood work would help to determine if you have it.

Here is an interesting story.... wwwasthmastory...com/

Good luck

Thank you all so very much for your comments and advice. Unfortunately our surgery is closed now till next Wed i won't even get an appointment then but going to try my best to. That's been 2 courses of Amoxicillin ive had months apart and neither worked wouldnt you think GP would realize that. Our practise though is pathetic the receptionists think they're the doctors you gotta get passed them first. As for them not ordering up scripts when ordered well least said the better there.

I'm thinking seriously about moving though ive been with this one for nearly 30yrs but its got worse. Too many patients on tgeir books its the biggest one in Belfast with over 5000 patients and only 3 GPs.

The dihorrea is woeful ive only to sneeze have had few accidents to cause cudnt make it. Stomach cramps also.

This is going on over a year with me i think it's ridiculas our doctors have not done more. Getting bloods done on Wed God willing so that may show up what tgese bugs are.

No i haven't had a scan done do you think I should've had?

Thank you
