Hi im Rhys, im coughing/clearing up blood since June 2021, but it’s on and off ,been to GP, Ive had an x ray, CT, Bloods, endoscopy, Sputum samples, and TB test and the results were all negative. I dont really have a cough. I smoked for a few months and this year but quit as soon as I coughed up brown flame with blood streaks. It went away for 6 weeks, but recently had a small bit of blood again maybe in the mornings or after some meals..
Im booked in for an bronchoscopy in a week but has anyone else been going through this own had this happen? Im getting really anxious to say the least because nobody has answers.. but they seem to think its probably not anything sinister as im 33.. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys. Thanks so much!

i often when clearing my throat cough up blood.perhaps about every two months or so i will have a period of about a week when the blood is both old and dark red and some fresh stuff is prevalent as well and then it just stops.i have diagnosed Barretts oesophagus and i think that although not cancerous at it's present stage i can only assume that it can sometimes inflame the lining of the throat even more and produce this effect,it is alarming but i am not too concerned and perhaps a referal to an ENT specialist might put your mind at rest.
i might add that i think you can be a little more relaxed about these episodes and they generally tend to disappear with time and invariably they are nothing to do with the lungs.
Thanks a lot for your reply! I have seen an ENT and they found nothing at all. I often get both dark and fresh blood streaks also.. I have a Bronchoscopy next week so ill hopefully find out more.. Thanks a lot for your advice it does help
I little bit of blood goes a long way. There are small capillaries in the throat and coughing can cause them to rupture. This can also happen with infections or when the throat is inflamed. There are a number of causes. You are very young to have a more sinister cause however your doctor appears to be covering all bases which if they are coming back negative should be reassuring as the tests you already have had would have picked up a gross abnormality.
Yes, thank you for your reassurance, My Dr did mention that the chances of it being something sinister are 1/10,000, and i do try to remember those positives when the anxiety becomes really bad. Thanks a lot for the comment and help
Hi there. I have had this problem in the past and it is happening more frequently over the past few months. I think it is to do with the coughing that I do when I am trying to do my clearance of mucus exercises in the evening. You see I have bronchiectasis and sometimes this blood in the phlegm can be a symptom of that. Usually it is a blood vessel that has burst due to the force of the coughing. However, in my own case, the last blood in my phlegm indicated a chest infection that I didn’t realise I had. A bronchoscopy is a good idea and it’s also good that your other tests are negative. Best wishes. X
Yes, when the blood first came back it was accompanied by yellow sputum.. I didnt feel like I had an infection at all though.. apparently People can get infections and not really realise it?
