Has anyone tried Beetroot juice, several years ago there were news paper articles on this food.

There was a suggestion it could help with breathing in athletes and perhaps some illnesses.

Hi, I care for my husband who has severe COPD and a couple of years ago I bought a lot of pure beetroot juice because of these claims and it does make sense to me BUT it has an affect on the colour of urine - in fact I nearly needed an ambulance for my husband who I had forgotten to forewarn!!! That was the end of our experiment! TAD xx

Hi,

what a great pity you didn't continue with your beetroot juice.

Thankyou for the gigle. I can imagine your husbands surprise. Hope he got over it quickly

Just reading the link you put in about beet root juice. Do you know which nitrates that are in the juice? Would it be the same that is used in curing pork?

Yes, I think so. All forms of nitrate are equivalent in their biological function, and some is produced as part of normal metabolism.

Is eating beetroot just as good? I love beetroot. x

Raw beetroot is just as good, but cooking will deplete the nutrient content.

Of course, weight for weight the juice will have more nutrients and raw or cooked beetroot more fibre - though dietary fibre has its own health benefits . . .

Thanks stilltruckin. xx

Very good for you, again urine does change colour with lots of intake, definite pro's for beetroot though.

I have found a supply of beetroot juice at Morrisons.

Its not cheap...... 1 litre @ £2-98.

I have got one to give it a go. .......Anyone know

how much to drink per day. ??????

On the carton it says 150ml is equal to a 1 a day item of fruit//veg.

If all goes well will try Tesco theirs is nearer the £2-00 mark.

Fingers crossed.......maybe it will have an effect ......maybe not.

I love pickled beetroot could eat it by the barrow load. .......Can't take the vinegar.

However my 'owed mon ' has plans to make space in his veg patch.

I bought a 1 litre carton from Asda this morning. £1.98. It's organic too. It's called Beet It by James White. LOL sounds like I'm talking about a music CD :-)

Hi Tamara70,

Never gave nitrates a thought, did some reading this evening and came up with the following links. .....Must say it was interesting.

thesweetbeet.com/nitrates

meatesandsausages.com/sausa...

Let us all know your conclusions.

PS. Poemsgalore..... thanks for the price check, its not easy getting 'him indoors...' out to Asda's...... but that price difference might just do it..........J.

I took part in a beetroot study last year and although the results are yet to be published my breathing did improve and I was retaining more oxygen due to the nitrates. I found drinking the juice a real trial though. For me I thought it tasted disgusting.

Hi, Beetroothead ,

thankyou for letting us now about the study you took part in, so pleased that it worked for you. Now for a few questions............

How much did you drink per day ?

How long for, weeks/ months ?

How soon did you notice the breathing benefits..?

Any idea when the results will be published. ?

Do hope you dont my asking, and feel sure alot of other

members will be as interested as I am........

Regards. Joan.....
