How far will I go in 1 hour on this grey day whilst listening to planet rock?

I'm sat looking out of the patio doors at a grey and gloomy day, Tiger the cat is sat by my side, there's a Blackbird coming backwards and forwards building its nest in the honeysuckle bush where it sets up residence every year, a magpie is pecking at some bread on the lawn that I've just thrown out and I am wondering what to do next. I've just googled the weather in Malvern and its 10 degs outside with a good chance of rain so do I fire up the treadmill for my daily exercise or get kitted up and get outdoors.

Decision made, I'm going to fire up the treadmill, tune in to planet rock on the lap top, connect it through the Hi Fi, turn up the volume and see how far I can walk in 1 hour.

Healthunlockeders, you can try and guess how far I'll go if you wan't The answer should be coming up in just over 1 hour.

  • Oh no idea Tony but will say 4 1/2 miles.

  • Hi Suzy, This was new territory for me as I have never done more than 1/2 an hour before so I was a little optimistic to take the giant step to 1 hour. Well I'm still alive and I made it but things were getting a little foggy at the end. I managed exactly 2.5 miles, I set the treadmill speed to 2.5 MPH which is my normal speed for 1/2 an hour and off I went. The last 1/2 was a case of hanging on and putting 1 foot in front of another and not in the grave.

Planet rock was playing Doctor Doctor by UFO when I finished which was very apt I think. I'm back watching the blackbird working hard at making his nest, its his turn now :)

  • Well done Tony. I said 4.5 miles because you are always surprising me. Weather here been beautiful all day. I was watching a Magpie the other day with a very long twig. Haven't seen a Blackbird in the garden yet.

  • Good Luck !! Wouldn't dare guess - you always seem to surprise me with your efforts! Take care, TAD xx

I didn't quite manage the 4 1/2 miles Suzy predicted above :) , you were wise not to guess.

  • Alas I don't have your choice of a treadmill dall05, but for the view in your photograph my friend, oh what I would give for that.

Afraid I am a permanent indoor resident these days, just hoping I can get a bit of a life on my invalid scooter when this weather is a little better.

Keep up the good work and Oh! next time the 2.5 mile is a sure thing. Well done.

  • Thanks 80+, That was the hardest I've worked for some time but you have to push the limits when the time is right don't you. I hope the weather changes for you soon so you can rev up the scooter and get out to see those daffs

  • Hi Tony (the running man) wow didnt you do well double the time you seriously pushed your boundaries there, as only you would. You continue to be such an inspiration.Im hoping to start my exercise regime again next week,I have my 6min thingy tuesday so providing my bp is all good It'll be all systems go hopefully cant wait.Keep going Tony . :) Janexx

  • It was more like running out of steam man at the end Jane but I feel better having done it than if I had sat in my chair all afternoon. That treadmill has been worth every penny when the weather is bad but sometimes I am tempted to go a little crazy on it like today's effort.

I'm glad your feeling better and good luck next Tuesday with the 6 minute thingy. On my 1st ever 6 minute walk I managed 100 meters on 5 liters of oxygen and had to sit back in my wheel chair 5 times, I did 480 meters last week without oxygen so there's proof of what a little exercise can do. My sat's did drop into the 60s though. :) but soon picked up again once I stopped.

  • You've come such a long way Tony - and I don't mean today! Good for you. xxx

  • Well done Tony. The dormouse is off on her travels this weekend. We are all off for a little extreme camping. Oxy has been delivered so no excuses. Didn't quite manage an hours walk but did take an hour to hover lounge dining Room and kitchen. Well I am a tidy little house mouse. You are still my hero superman - D x

  • Hi Superwoman, You can come round here if you like, we've had a Cotswold stone fireplace removed and there is so much dust everywhere we could do with somebody handy with a hoover. :)

Whats with this extreme camping your doing, at least the weather is improving this weekend so I hope you have a great time. We may go off somewhere for a drive on mothers day, possibly Weston Super mare or Cardiff Bay but nothing decided yet.

Look after yourself DD and don't get cold out there ok.

  • Thanks peeg, I love a challenge and today I was pushing things a little but its doing this that has got me back to where I am now. The first physio who came to see me at the house 4 years ago said you can sit in your wheel chair with your oxygen and except that's it for me or exercise and improve as much as is possible.

Lucky for me I chose the later but there never was a choice, it was a no brainer really. Those early months were so incredibly hard when I look back and when I see that physio now he can't believe how well I look, his very words were you were 'skeletor there was so little muscle left to work with'. I have a lot to thank him for and the other physios who helped me physically and mentally along that bumpy road.
