Silly silly woman

I didn't think they let you have oxygen if you still smoked, because of this risk
Unfortunately many people hide the fact that they are still smoking from the oxygen companies'
Sheer stupidity
KOTC
I agree, I don't smoke, but if I did I wouldn't even do it in the same room as oxygen!! Unbelievable.
Oh dear poor woman! Im afraid I dont believe stories to much in the papers Im sure theres more to it than published and we will never know the truth. The media love this kinda tale to publish wrongly half truths etc etc. Janexx
Tragic addiction that can kill family and neighbours with a fire. Obviously very ill if she needed oxygen and the hospital have put her in a coma trying to save her life I shall not be hasty in judging what has lead to this tragedy.

on the am news,it just said woman was near the oxygen when she lit up,so might not have been hers? still dangerous but we should not judge without the full details,i don't,xxx, and I hope the woman pulls through .whatever the case, and the papers never get the full facts ,
The idea of a family smoking in the house of a patient using oxygen fills me with a greater dread that this woman could have been using oxygen when some one else began the fire she would be unable to escape from.Wise words we should not believe all we read in the papers twiceshy when good news will not sell newsprint.

There is always one
Hi Suzy6. Our oxygen man was telling us about a couple of people who have done that. Very silly. I'm sure they would have been told. We were. Not that any of us smoke anyway.
Its very sad she needs the oxygen but also needs the gigs as an x smoker I feel for her.
I have always been of the opinion that smokers should not be prescribed oxygen for two reasons. One that all the advantages of using oxygen is being taken away by smoking. The other is as this story shows, the very real fire risk. Yes I am on oxygen. And yes I used to smoke. And Yes if I was still smoking I would not expect to be given oxygen. But, when you get bad enough, as i did, you will stop smoking without a moments hesitation. Sorry if this upsets the smokers among us...
I'm with derrylynne on this.
I too was a smoker for over fifty years and when the time came for 02 or cigarettes it was a no brainer. One was helping me to live the other would kill me, I am still here so I'm sure that the choice I made was the right one.
I'm not with derrylynne - quite the opposite and I'm surprised at such an attitude from someone with COPD.
I was still smoking when I went on oxygen and was warned about this very thing happening if I forgot I was hooked up to oxygen when lighting a cigarette. Being a smoker does not remove common sense and/or intelligence level.
We're already living in a nanny state; why should smokers be punished by withholding treatment? Does this mean everyone who does something risky should have medical treatment withheld?
Rant over but I'm still peeved.
Should an alcoholic with cirrhosis get a liver transplant if they won't stop drinking?
I hear what you're saying but a better example might be refusing to treat anyone who chooses to risk injury in their profession or hobby.
(This should have been as a reply to CarrieMe)
There are responsible ways of managing the risk in work and leisure (safety harnesses, breathing apparatus etc). Accidents happen. There don't appear to be any ways of limiting the risk of damage to your body if you smoke.
Yes, in some instances but what about people who regularly put their lives at risk through choice such as racing drivers, jockeys, extreme sports fanatics, ski jumpers, etc.?
If smokers are denied treatment then surely these people should be too; after all, they're inflicting damage on themselves!
Not everyone who smokes develops COPD or related illnesses. My grandfather smoked at least 40 a day all his life and lived to a ripe old 96.
I don't know if it's still the case but I was prescribed oxygen a few years ago when I was still smoking.
My mum was on oxygen in hospital as she had a bad chest infection. I remember having a an argument with her about smoking when she wanted a cigarette and told her she could blow herself up. She also had COPD, but also suffered with dementia before she died so it was difficult to reason with her. Addictions are very powerful!
Some compassion for this woman who might pay the highest price for her mistakes is surely in our understanding of the life that is driven by addiction beyond control. A family are suffering with fear of losing their wife/mother as judgements are made on the intelligence of their loved one. I ask in all seriousness is this the time for such a debate as now held here.
