Our flooring needs updating in the living room and bedroom, because of my COPD I would like laminate but the family think it would be too cold. Any comments please.

I can give you five reasons to avoid it Polly. Cold, noisy, slippery, expensive and shows all the dust. With COPD go for a low pile carpet.

I am sure a lo of people will disagree but i like my carpets when i visit homes with laminate floors it triggers my asthma ,it was my daughter that noticed this little balls of fluff floating around, at least they settle on a carpet .
Think you have too be prepared to go round a couple of times a day to keep the dust down but we are all different and what triggers one doesn't another . take care love Dorothyxxx
I've got cushion floor in my lounge, was the cheaper option at a time when I was skint. At the time I had 2 dogs, now sadly passed away and I always thought nasty things were lurking in the carpet! Never regretted it. Looks just like laminate but is soft, quiet and very hard wearing. Because of the texture it's not slippy, unless wet of course. A large rug in the middle. People are always really surprised when they realise it's not actually laminate. A couple of friends have also had it since they saw mine. Have a look online, you'll be surprised how good they can look. Libby x
I have wood affect laminate in the lounge and hall, a large close cut rug over it for added durability and cosey, I think its easier cleaning.
In the bedroom I still have carpet.
It will be nice to have new floor coverings Polly although check with carpet people if you go that way about the chemicals that may be used in treating the carpet explain about your lungs.

we have recently had carpet tiles laid. For me perfect BUT why once they were laid, we had to make a decision to move house.
It's carpet every time for me, short pile 80%wool/20%acrylic mix. I was told by the carpet layer (he also does cushion floor) that a good carpet will pay for itself over a couple of years in the savings you make regarding heating the house. Wish I'd chosen a darker colour though!!

We put a wooden floor in my daughters bedroom and the room is much colder, much noisier, slippier and although we have a wooden floor in the dining room am glad for the carpet in the lounge etc. Good luck TAD xx
I know a lot of you like to have a rug down on laminate flooring to take some of the bareness off of a room but a bit of caution is needed. If possible, avoid a hessian back on the rug as this will make the rug slip and slide about; not a good thing where old 'uns are concerned. You can now buy a thin latex mesh which goes under the rug and stops it sliding. Most good carpet shops stock it but it isn't that cheap.

We have oak flooring,and love it,would never go back to carpet.we have a little dog who as mentioned does make some noise,but at least I know exactly where he is.lol
We have rubber mesh under the mats like Bobby advised,they are a must.

my whole house is laminate and its so much better for likes of us just mop over with damp mop and no if u get right one it will not be cold we have door mats down bigish mat near fireplace looks cosy i think and certainally less work

There are two types of mesh. One is a plastic mesh with a thin latex coating. Great for a start but the latex wears off and the plastic can damage the floor. The other sort is the far more expensive pure latex one. These won't damage the floor. Because they are more expensive you will only usually find them in the higher end carpet retailers.

Love laminate, good quality spongy underneath with rugs .. very clean no allergies, low maintenance.. the better the quality is the key mine is so good it looks like oak flooring..
Downstairs laminate, with a rug, well secured! Upstairs carpet. Ideal for me - I find the laminate easier to clean as hoovering upsets me (breathing, emptying the bag, and the physicality of it).
Good morning, thanks for your input, I think I will be sticking with carpet, hubby had a couple of falls recently and I had not thought of that and the rugs would also be a tripping point with him. He will be happy now he didn't want laminate.

I'm with you Stick. Vinyl cushion flooring. Warm, quiet, doesn't harbour dust or bugs and available in all colours and styles. Just mop clean too,,,,perfect.
we replaced our carpets with wood, no rugs. I have a bathmat next to the bed (easily washed). not too cold but wonderful relief from dust. wish we'd done it years ago.
Laminate for me, in bedroom, kitchen and living room. Have never slipped over (touch wood) so much easier to clean. I would never go back to carpets especially with my dog. My daughter however has laminate but wants carpet. Be boring if we were all rhe same
Just the thought of the smell of a new carpet makes me feel very breathless.
I have laminate right through, I have colourful rugs and don't find it cold and now we have the pup its far easier to clean. And you can easil spot the fluff and dirt rather than have it lost within the carpet. However the choice is yours. If you coudl afford it I woudl suggest proper hardwood. It looks lovely and does feel warmer.
