Have just been prescribed Montelukast 10 mg at 1 a night, was told could be at least 6 weeks before I see any benefit from taking it, does anyone else take this and do they work???

My middle daughter takes it as she has lots of allergies including asthma and she finds it helps, but I tried it and found no difference in my breathing at all.

I have been on it for several years - it helps me feel less like drowning in mucus when I get asthmatic and yes it does take a good six weeks to work and then you have to take it regularly,
I take them and have been on them for about 4 years. They made my breathing easier. But I now have bronchiectasis and as well as asthma and they are not as effective.
I have bronchiectasis and asthma and I've been prescribed it to hopefully stop me coughing all night, I'm Los on seretide, spiriva and salbutamol inhalers as well as carbocistine capsules. Got to have the HIB vaccine next week.... I'm also on immuno suppressants and prednisolone due to a kidney transplant as well as angina meds.... I'm only 40 yrs old but feel 100 lol 
I started on Montelukast some time ago after going to my Drs complaining about coughing at night. It did the trick - can't remember how long it took though - but it definately worked for me 
Thank you, I'm starting to despair.. Not sleeping due to coughing, living on Buttercup Syrup and Jakemans Honey & lemon lozenges at night but they're not really helping x
Claire. I am sure it will be more effective than your cough bottle. Hope you feel the benefits soon.
I have been on it a couple of times (and am back on it now). Took about 3 weeks for me to notice an improvement.

The Montelukast should help a lot if you have asthma, but not so good for those with COPD. It reduces the inflammation caused by coughing and help to open up the airways in your lungs and can reduce the effect of some allergies, .
You must take it at the same time each day to be most effective as it provides 24 hours of cover before losing it's effectiveness by breaking down and passing into the waste system of your body, which is why the drug dosage needs to be replaced daily.
I've had it a for a few years now and it is the one most notable item that I really notice if I miss a dose, I can be really gasping for breath the day after if I don't take it, not always.

Hi Juliekkay, my daughter was prescribed it as she has lots of allergies including asthma...so it may be to help the allergic response?

Don't really know why it's not for COPD too, I did try looking and even Wikipedia says "Montelukast (trade names Singulair, Montelo-10, and Monteflo and Lukotas in India) is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies." - no mention of COPD there.
I have both, and I have it as an essential part of my daily routine, I wouldn't be without.

Do you take the Montek for asthsma then or for COPD ?
Can I please ask why you say it's no good for copd ...my lung consultant has just put me on it ..I have moderate copd and asthma ..thank you
I take it as I have asthma and hay fever and its always helped me get a better sleep as I was always waking up coughing and short of breath now I sleep through and it also helps my hay fever
If your coughing before bed and using cough meds over the counter have you tried actifed?
Mum used to give me and my brother both with bad asthma that when we had bad coughs at night and it helps the coughs and also helped us fall asleep our gp when we was little thought it was a great idea
I've been on this med for 5-6 years for allergies and it has been a good drug for me. I have tried the vicks on bottoms of my feet, (maybe helped.) drinking dill pickle juice (maube helped). The only thing I can tell you for sure that worked was a combo of all 3 as well as an antihistamine before bedtime.

When I started on montelukast 5years ago I slept through the night in a long time - worked straight away for me

I have CF and COPD also i was just put on plan Montelukast 10mg today by my lung specialist hoping to breath better and be able to bring up some of this stubborn thick phlegm, The mind is also a very power thing if we think positive we will receive positive results the power of life and death is in the tongue if we speak or think negativity we will receive a negative responce!

I'll try to find more websites on the subject and let you know ok, please try drinking a lot of water alike like a gallon a day and breathing exercises also if you can it really helps.....

Long-term montelukast therapy in moderate to severe COPD—a preliminary observation
The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the effects of long-term treatment with montelukast on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) control in a cohort of patients with moderate to severe COPD. The medical records of 20 consecutive male patients (18 African-Americans) aged 71.2±10.7 years diagnosed with moderate to severe COPD at the VA Chicago Health Care System, Chicago, Illinois, USA, and treated with oral montelukast, 10 mg every night, for 23.6±7.3 months were reviewed. Information on demographics and COPD control was extracted from each record. In each patient, a comparable follow-up period in the clinic before and after initiating montelukast therapy was reviewed and tabulated so each patient served as his own control. There was a significant improvement in complaints of shortness of breath, sputum production wheezing and nocturnal symptoms during the observation period (P<0.05). There was a significant reduction in the use of oral and inhaled corticosteroids, inhaled bronchodilators and supplemental oxygen (P<0.05). In addition, there was a significant reduction in the number of visits to the emergency department, number of hospitalizations and duration of hospitalizations for acute exacerbations of COPD (P<0.05). No significant changes in FEV1 (% predicted), FEV1/FVC ratio (% predicted) and peak expiratory flow rate were recorded during this time. No side effects where reported during the observation period and no patient discontinued the medication. Collectively, these data suggest that long-term treatment with montelukast is safe and improves COPD control in elderly patients with moderate to severe COPD.

Thank you so much Johnny ,you have worked so hard for me and i really appreciate what you have done ..studies do seem to be positive something to raise a smile ...i was first diagnosed with Bronchectisis ?? but 2 years ago a new consultant changed it to Copd but he never bothered to tell me what it was ,have been reading up and joined a couple of groups but to be honest ,when the first thing you read is that someone has passed away ,it scares the hell out of me ...slowly i am learning more and are taking this decease more seriously ie i take my meds when im supposed to ..early days on the montelukast so fingers crossed ...again ,thank you for your help and company ,i find it hard to talk about all this so please bare with me .....Hope we can chat again ..stay well xxx
Hey johnny1959 was wondering how things are going with that medication ...it seems to be helping me , blew a normal test last week also my lungs are that of a 62 ..i'll take that ,i'm 60 ..no chest infections and breathing alot better ..hope theyre working well for you too ..much love xx
