Okay, here we go, I really struggling with this one. Since my AVR and CABG 7 months ago I've had really loud and constant flatulence, not particularly smelly just loud, I can't even blame the dog. It's got to the point I'm worried about going out to public places where I can't slip away out of earshot. Never had a problem before the op. My new meds are Bisoporsol, Losartan and Clopidodral. Anyone else suffered after their op?

Flatulence

After my TAVI I had stomach discomfort with violent wind. I was (am) on Clopidogrel and Ramipril. My surgeon had said that I didn't need an antacid, my GP insisted that I did and issued a prescription of Lansoprazole. Within two days of taking the pills my discomfort had all but disappeared and my wind decreased to what I understand is normal.
Nowadays I only take Lansoprazole when I have a touch of stomach discomfort, a policy endorsed by the cardiologist at my last review.
My wind has seldom been loud and I can restrain it when close to others.
Thanks for your reply, I've been taking lansoprazole for years, long before my heart problems for acid reflux. I know it if I miss a day, indigestion within 12hrs. Maybe I need to increase the dose. I wasn't surprised to have flatulence after the op because of lack of activity and anesthetic etc but after 7 months it's not improved at all.
also, have a look at the NHS app for their advice.
That happened to me after my CABG.
My bowel habits changed - I had loose stools, had to go a few times per day, had loud rumbling in my tummy all the time and constant flatulence.
Reaction to medication and diet was ruled out and I had the usual tests to rule out cancer of the bowel.
Ten months on, my bowel habits have stabilised but I still suffer from flatulance. It can be embarrassing and I find it a bit depressing.
Interestingly, my cardiac rehab nurse said that I had probably picked up a 'bug' in the hospital. Either in the ward or on the operating table. She said she had recently seen several other CABG patients with the same symptoms.
My GP didn't pursue this theory any further though. So I'm still none the wiser as to why this happened.
Hi, I would highly recommend Yukult. Excellent.
Good idea, I did have 1 a day for a few weeks when I first came out of hospital. I will go back to it. Thankyou

Yep. It's the meds I'm told. It's at its worst when I eat certain things. So I started my Fart Diary, jot down the offending items and avoid them when going out or visiting family and friends. I've just accepted it now, don't like it but apart from that I'm doing ok. Life's not perfect and it's definitely got a lot more windy. 🤗
Yep! As we "hearty farties" will tell you, theses things come with a big bang!!! This will continue for quite a while .
In my case, I'm just beginning to get to grips with it, 2 years down the line, not completely eliminated, but greatly reduced, not magic formula's, just the body adjusting. So if your planning meetings, social get togethers, always have an emergency escape plan ready!
Something that is well documented is that people on a keto diet suffer practically zero flatulence and if they return to their normal diet with a lot more carbohydrate, the flatulence returns. Not suggesting a keto diet for you, but keep an eye on the amount of carb you are eating and see if increased flatulence occurs when you eat more carb. If it does, try reducing the amount of carb you eat.
My husband's the same on his diabetes and BP meds. Trouble is he's deaf and thinks he's not making a noise. I disown him at such times.
That made me laugh out loud 🤣🤣
Flatulence is a great side affect,😀 there's far worse!
I wouldn't say it's a great side effect but agree there are much worse.
Ha, yeah. I think it might be the statins.
I used to have a cast-iron stomach but now I have to eat like a monk, things like salad, tomatoes, spicy foods, beef, beer just churn my guts, not only wind but also burps, cramps, bloating etc. I'm on lanzoprazole which helps a little bit. Even sleeping on my side can be uncomfortable or wearing too tight pants.
I'm OK if I totally cut out caffeine, tomatoes, red meat, spices and don't eat too many raw vegetables and avoid anything carbonated. But that's pretty restrictive.
I've seen a GI specialist who told me to double the lanzo dose and he gave me a prescription for some kind of anti-cramp medication. That actually helped but my cardiologist wouldn't let me double the lanzoprazole so I'm sort of in limbo. It's been 4 years, has gotten somewhat better, but upshot is I'm often in discomfort.
Sound like your a lot worse than me. I can't blame the statins as I've been on them for a number of years, this has only happened since my operation and it is just flatulence, no upset stomach or cramps. I've also been taking lansoprazole for acid reflux before my heart issues,
