(almost) 9 weeks post AVR/root enlargement

So this coming Wednesday it’ll be nine weeks since I had my AVR/aortic root enlargement, and I have an appointment with my cardiac surgeon this coming Monday. I have a long list of questions to ask, but in the main my recovery has been straightforward, although not without a few little blips which I guess again is par for the course .

The actual pain is virtually non existent now – apart from a sneeze but even that’s much more bearable than it was: I’m getting lots of odd twinges and spasms which I guess are nerves reconnecting and apart from one notable (& very enjoyable) three hour deep sleep one afternoon this week, I no longer need daytime naps.

What I am waiting for though is the anticipated resurgence of energy from my new valve which is showing no signs of appearing just yet .

Is this something which will happen once my sternum and muscles are fully healed in about a month time, and I’m then able to resume my normal physical activities? I guess I’m just impatient to enjoy life again…..🤷🏼‍♂️

Don't worry, it'll come. The key is to totally accept your restricted activity. Nine weeks is very early but by the sound of it you are progressing nicely! Four or five months is when you will be approaching "lift off"! Although even then you can't do everything and will still have the odd twinges, that lasts for years. Good luck,

Hi, I remember 5 months on from my OHS for a new aortic valve I was up to doing a reasonable hill walk but only a half day rather than a full one that the rest of the group I was with were doing.Another 5 months and I was within a couple of minutes of my normal 5k Parkrun time which was better than just before my op.

It takes time but it sounds like you're doing ok, listen to your body and try not to get impatient.

I'm nearly 6 years on and nobody would know I'd ever been at deaths door, I was just pre op. We are all different so recovery times and levels do vary.

Re the spasms, I was having them in my chest for months after surgery and normally at night when I lay down to sleep. I assumed the same as you and I guess that was the case.

Take care.

Andy
