aortic stenosis

Dear Marje
Your severe stenosis is life threatening so probably needs to take priority. But your surgeons will need to decide which op comes first.
Please be assured that the valve replacement is a pretty fabulous op. Maybe a TAVi ? Then you will soon be fit for the hip. Or maybe it will be OHS (open heart surgery), for which a couple of months is needed for recovery.
I had the OHS five years ago and it was a good experience, saving my life.
The surgeons were very clear in telling me I had just a few months to live, but I have heard of a few patients who went to the stage of Critical.
I have had no heart issues throughout the past five years. Perhaps you have good things to look forward to.
Best wishes
Sooty
been told as I have no symptoms yet hip operation can go ahead but a lot will depend on anaesthetist
I think I'd want the hip at least doing by epidural and not a general anaesthetic. The method should have been explained to you long before now and your heart problems discussed. I suggest phoning the orthopaedic department and demanding to speak to an anaesthetist. Write down your questions beforehand. My mum had heart failure and her hip was replaced by epidural and just sedation. She had no problems.
Saw anaesthetist this morning they phoned me and it’s done under epidural as I’m higher risk group Thankyou to all that replied
Excellent. Mum said best thing she'd ever had done. They put a screen up so she could see nothing and had a nurse chatting to her. The only thing she found unpleasant and laughed about, was the smell when they cut off the top of her hip joint. This was a lot of years ago; around 30. Things have much improved since then. She was up and walking the next day and climbing stairs the day after. Once she could do that she came home.
Hi Marje99, I had total left hip replacement surgery in October 2024, I had nstemi and quadruple bypass surgery in July 2023. It went well. Pre op assessment covered my medical history . I also made sure my cardiac consultant was in the loop by emailing her . She wasn’t in the loop but agreed to the surgery 🤦🏼..
Your medical team will have all your information/history and won’t go ahead if they think you are at risk.
What have they said ?
Saw anaesthetist this morning am at higher risk but cardiology said it was fine although severe I’m asymptomatic so due to go ahead on 7th of March and I will be monitored more closely under spinal block
I needed an aortic valve replacement and a total knee replacement in 2021, the orthopaedic surgeon wouldn't do the knee replacement until six months after the valve replacement.
Rehab from the heart valve was a bit slower due to knee pain.
