hi I have just had my 6 months echocardiogram and the sonographer say’s she is surprised I don’t have symptoms, as valves are quite tight ! Am waiting to see my cardiologist now but wondered if anyone else found they had severe valve problems with little signs of symptoms?

Two years ago, I mentioned to my GP that in the past three or so winters I had discomfort in the middle of my chest when setting off for a walk, though it went away after half-an-hour or so, after which I went on to complete walks of five hours plus. No other obvious symptoms. After a minute with his stethoscope, he diagnosed a faulty valve, later confirmed to be severe aortic stenosis. In the following months, other symptoms developed, but a week before my TAVI op I cautiously completed a six-hour walk in two stages.

I still get that chest discomfort when setting off, but a recent ECG showed that all was well with my heart.

(I gather that post-op rehab sessions often start with gentle warm-ups, so perhaps I ought to try these before setting off for a walk.)

All I had was some chest 'discomfort', but only when exercising quite hard. One of the giveaways, which I or the GP didn't pick up on at the time, was my BP was quite high. After the OP it's now quite low. I had my OP about 4 months after the intial diagnosis.

yes. Me too. I had a bit of chest discomfort and my blood pressure, having always been good suddenly went up. I went to see the GP about the blood pressure and he sent me for an echo. I was expecting to be put on medication when I saw the GP but within weeks learned that I had severe aortic stenosis and was facing open heart surgery 🫨. I had surgery in June 2023, recovering was sure and steady and for the last year or so my life has returned to normal

Hi. I was admitted to hospital with what turned out to be unstable Angina. While I was there I had an echocardiogram which showed severe Aortic valve stenosis. Because the priority was sorting out the angina I left with a bag of pills. The discharge letter was just a list of the drugs and my diagnosis.

Wasn’t well at the weekend with what I thought was Asthma. Managed to see duty GP. Between us we have now come to the conclusion that my breathlessness is not due to Asthma. She thinks I was misdiagnosed. The only symptoms I have had over 18 months was breathlessness when walking briskly and very occasional light headedness. Which I put down to a change in bp med.So I wouldn’t say I had any symptoms, only what I could put down to rushing around and aging.

The GP was not impressed that I hadn’t been given a follow up appointment. She wrote a detailed email referring me to the Cardiac dept and at lunchtime I got an email appointment in 8 weeks time.

I hope you get an appointment soon.

Likewise, I hope that it all goes well. Waiting seems to be the hard part but hopefully you will look back on today happy that the worst is over and you are heading to a recovery

According to my cardio rehab nurse, there are a high percentage of people who have aortic stenosis and live entirely healthy lives without being aware of it

Hi yes I can believe that as I must have had mine for ages before diagnosis, at least now I know why hills were an effort ! Take care
