Having been told by the Cardiologist that my 'heart failure' - (can't we insist on a better term?) was 'probably due to a virus' I am on Bisoprolol 2.5mg Bumetanide 1mg and Digoxin 62.5mg.
However, I am experiencing an almost constant runny nose and congested nose and Eustachian tubes- particularly when trying to lie flat at night which makes sleeping flat almost impossible .
Anyone else had this a a side effect? And do you any tips on how to successfully overcome this or what to do next?

yes I wish there was a better term! I do t have this, but I do have a blocked and/or runny nose especially in the winter. I take one Echinacea tablet a day, which seems to help a bit, and Sinex soother spray up my nose.
Heart Failure is a bad term it only means the heart is not working as well as it should but with medication a normal life is possible.Bisoprolol causes running noses and cold feet and hands but as in my case it’s minor
I didn’t know it causes cold hands - that makes me feel better! I thought it was a sign my heart wasn’t working well. Thank you! (My cardiologist says my heart IS working well)
Yes, I also suffer with constant streaming nose and much sneezing. I have heart failure (AF, mechanical mitral valve, right ventricle is dilated and weakened). My medication consists of: Atorvastin, Bisoprolol, Cadesartin, Digoxin, Jardiance empagliflozin and Finasteride. Is a streaming nose a side effect of my medication? I have discussed this with my doctors but none have suggested it could be a side effect. Any comment anybody?
That is a seriously low dose! I'm fortunate to need a mix of 7 and 8 per day. Between 52 and 56 per week. Fortunate because if it needs tweaking I can knock off 1 or 2 mg. If you reduce that amount it's 66% of your total dosage! All the best.
Try this Silvercrest Facial Sauna (ebay), get a bottle of Olbas oil, (chemist or Tesco if in the UK) about 4 drops in the water, it’ll blow your head off and clear out everything, as it isn’t medication it won’t mess with your meds and it definitely works.
Hi can I just say, I tried oilbus oil, it gave me heart palpitations. I mentioned this to my Dr. Apparently firstly it can effect other meds your on, so isn't advisable to take. So maybe speak with a healthcare professional first. I also had tried a Vic nose inhaler and it done exactly the same thing. Just beware. 🤗
Others have mentioned that this can be a side effect of Beta-blockers like Bisoprolol
If you decide to try over-the-counter treatments please check with a pharmacist that these will not clash with your prescribed medications
Also try reading the information leaflet which comes with your medication - this lists side effects as well as contraindications (things you should avoid)
Having had Chronic rhinitis for years and prescription sprays permanently, I tried a nasal rinse twice daily. I no longer use the sprays and it's 80% better!
After a Nasal Polyp operation over 20 years ago I was prescribed Nasacort and the prescription has never been stopped. I use the spray before bed and then rinse with Sterimar, salt water, every morning. I haven't had a solidly blocked nose since the op, even when I have a cold.
Since Covid, I've also taken to rinsing my nose if I've been out in indoor spaces.
Now, I find this utterly fascinating. I was diagnosed with HF and AF two and a half years ago and it was decided that the former was the result of ‘a flu-like virus’. For the past two years, I’ve been on a drug regime called ‘the four pillars’ though I take more than four drugs, they do include Bisoprolol and Digioxin at the same dosage rate. Now for ten or more years I’ve developed hay fever every Spring and this has run through to late Summer. In fact the last time that I saw the GP, he prescribed an Antihistamine and Mometasone spray and suggested I begin using them in mid-February and cease using them at the end of October. They’ve certainly helped alleviate most of the symptom. However the over last two years I’ve noticed that I’ve continued the runny nose but, also added a persistent cough. This past November I got a severe cold and a sore throat. The latter is rarity for me. I decided that a visit to the GP might prove useful. I was given antibiotics which got rid of the sore throat but left the runny nose, sneezing and cough. So I went back and this time he to,d me that there was nothing in my lungs to generate the cough. The mucus was in throat and sinuses, “try Sterimar”. No use. I still have the cough to this day but, I’m going to try Mometasone to see what happens. Thank you.
Is cetrizine compatible? It has remarkably little effect on sleep ( unlike loratadine) and works after a day or three in a row. Clears up my sinuses. Paired with guafenisin for lung side of things ( once productive cough?), that's all I take for breathing. Works for me alongside olmesartan and brillinta. Not a fan of the cocktails like severe flu and cough-n-cold mixes.
My 2 cents.....if people are saying HF owing to a virus then the medical term would be myocarditis surely? I've had myocarditis and am currently recuperating. I'm making good progress and I'm able now to do fitness classes as normal in my local gym even. Not bad for someone who was in intensive care last May with an ejection fraction of 25%! Unfortunately now I seem to have venous insufficiency in my right leg. Another thing to contend with.
