Big increase in ectopics

So, in the last few weeks the ectopic beats (PVC) I’ve had for the last 20 years have suddenly ramped up (posted what I captured on my watch). These runs are now happening regularly and are often worse as the day goes on. The runs happen anywhere from between every 1 to every few minutes and can be consistently like this for hours. I went to my cardiologist who did get to see a couple of runs I was having at the time but, again said they were not sinister and that episodes like this can often kick in for a while before calming down again. Has anyone else had such episodes that have lasted for a while and if so, was there anything that helped in lessening their effects. As you can appreciate, when they’re this many and often they are pretty debilitating. Thanks.

I do feel ectopics are dismissed too readily yet are of obvious concern to many on this board.. They are the Cinderella of the heart world. The obvious thing to ask is whether anything has changed in the last few weeks as ectopics can seem to be triggered by a variety of things yet sometimes there appears to be no cause at all.

Different Food and drink are the first things to look at. Then the less obvious things.

Increased pollution by traffic. New cleaning fluids. New car. New smartphone. Server in a different position. New 5G masts. Increasing weight? Something different in your work environment.?

Do you keep a health diary that also lists your food and activities as that might help to pinpoint triggers.

Hi Devonian. I don’t think anything is different but I have started a journal now to see if there is anything specific. I retired a number of months back and had noticed a change leading up to it but it’s the fact that they have ramped up again in the last few weeks. One thing I have reduced and now want to focus on on again is exercise - need to try to push through the barrier when they kick in (not easy 😔). I’m conscious of not posting too many things up on this site, but I want it to be one element to help get through this period. With so many others in the same boat, it’s good to be able to share help and advice. Thanks again

Yes, I very nearly did an addendum to my last post about exercise. I find it helps to just walk a little briskly or with my hiking poles, as that often stops the ectopics. The strange thing is how sometimes you suspect it might be something specific that caused them, but often they just seem to come out of the blue. It could be that the seeds for that episode were sown many hours earlier or it could just be one of those things.

I found that tonal exercises work (basically humming loudly) and several times I have had ectopics going into a musical at the theatre and after being blasted by sound I find they have disappeared!

Definitely much research could be done on the subject but as I say it is the Cinderella of heart concerns, possibly because it seems to be tied up with the vagus nerve and few people are expert on both subjects-certainly not most GP's.

Hi Benno, it can be lots of things that cause your ectopics. I can only comment about my ectopics as every one is different so try to see your dr or preferably your cardiologist. I started feeling very dizzy more so than normal and felt really ill. It was getting worse and I could feel the ectopic beats getting worse. My husband called paramedics one evening and they did an ECG and said I was getting Bigeminy arrhythmia with too many ectopics. I was taken to hospital and was in for a week wired up to a machine and tropian levels raised slightly. Had MRI, & other tests. Was diagnosed with Myopericarditis inflammation of the heart and lining they said to rest for a few months to settle it down. This all led to having a CRT-D fitted (Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy Defibrillator). I originally was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy EF35 in 2022 LBBB. Sometimes ectopics are nothing to worry about but because I was wired up for a week they could see I was having 34,000 extra ectopics which was making me feel very ill. I hope you go on ok but please get checked out regularly. Joy.

Hello,

I’ve had PVC’s for over 7 yrs now and was prescribed bisoprolol for them which hasn’t really helped, but just recently I had a kidney issue which gave me high BP and consequently prescribed Amlodopine and whilst on this medication my ectopics have reduced by 90% , discussed this with my doctor and she said it can help some people the way it works on the heart. Something to think about isn’t it.been on it now for 3 months.

Thanks Steve. I’m on 3.75mg bisoprol and Ramipril. The cardiologist has told me to increase the bisoprolol to 5mg. Amlodopine was suggested but to give it a few months to see how things go. I’d like to try to keep pills to a minimum, but accept that’s not always possible. There’s no doubt my anxiety is playing a part. Booked a course of meditation sessions today. Let’s see how that goes 👍
