Bad few days

Hi all , it will three years in March since my massive heart attack and triple bypass , i’ve had a great quality of life and now aged 70 i get out on my motorcycle regularly and enjoy pottering in our garden, but i am lax in the exercise department. Now winter is creeping in up here in Northumberland i start to struggle mentally and physically. Tuesday we had been out and on my return i went up stairs and was half way up when the energy went from my legs and i was very out of breath.

It brought back all the memories flooding back of my health just before my heart attack.

i checked my body and pulse and they seemed ok .

i’m sure it was a combination of coming in from the extreme cold into a warm house, but cant shift from this feeling of doom.

thanks for listening

It would be worth seeing your GP, reporting these events to him/her so they can reassure you. A doctor will much prefer that you see them and it proves to be nothing, than not see them and there is a problem.

Is there any particular reason you find life more problematic in the winter? I hate the cold, dark months, and some of it is due to a lot of my symptoms being worse then, and some of it is because it concerns me that should I need help it could be difficult for help to get to me.

May I suggest contacting the cardiac rehab nurses at your local hospital regarding exercise? It's important not to get too lax in that department! Even in the winter there are some simple indoor exercises that will make your heart stronger.

And try not to worry, that feeling of doom is very common after traumatic events. But as others have said, a chat with your GP would be a good idea. Just to reassure you.

Sounds like you may well know the answer WJB2, a bit of effort towards improving your fitness could be the answer to a better quality of life. Doesn’t have to be extreme , just a bit of effort. Did you do the rehab classes post your heart attack ? You’ll have an idea of what exercises to do ? Probably wise to seek advice from your medical team. It’ll be well worth pursuing. Love my motorbikes and small holding too , really enjoying my rebirth post Nstemi and quadruple bypass July 2023.

hi thanks for reply, yes did all the rehab clinics and generally been ok since op in 2022. Even upgraded my VN900 to a Gen 6 DCT goldwing.

i’ve dug out my rehab exercise book and started those again to see me through the winter.

Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down.

Yep it will be my last bike at 70 years old and after the horrible year i had in 2022 the family said i should treat myself to one of my dream bikes, as im vertically challenged the BMW GS range were out of my reach (😂) and after testing the k1600 its was very nose heavy, stunning but a handfull at low speeds, so opted for used Gen 6 Goldwing DCT 21 plate and loving it, big win is my wife feels really safe on it.

thanks all for the responses, i’m in a much better place today. Spoke to rehab staff and as i track BP on a daily basis ( sad i know) they seemed quite happy with what they were seeing. I’ve had bloods done , i was diagnosed with extreme anaemia the year before my heart issues & and after many tests no cause was found and after a course of iron tablets it corrected its self.

results seem to show it has raised its head again so back in the rusty pills to see if it improves. Instant muscle fatigue is a classic sign of anaemia. So feeling a lot more buoyant now.

Weather has a huge impact on heart patients. We need Goldilocks weather but often it is too hot, too cold, too wet or too windy.

Going from the cold to a warm house and vice versa has a big impact and often worth wearing a scarf to initially cover your nose if weather is very cold. Similarly wind can literally take your breath away.

I agree, I've struggled during humid weather, not so much with dry hot weather. If I get cold my feet, hands & nose take forever to warm up.
