My dad is going for heart valve surgery soon ish. Anyone know of anyone else so old who has had this operation? What was their recovery like? He is otherwise fit and healthy apart from wobbly knees held by braces.

I assume that's transcatheter? That's much less invasive than open heart surgery, but I only have experience with the later (having needed two valves done).

My surgeon proudly told me he had given a 102-year-old man a new valve.

I found this:

heart.org/en/health-topics/...

which suggests either for 65-80, and TAVI for 80+.

In older people a transcatheter aortic valve implantation TAVI is more commonly offered rather than open heart surgery to replace an aortic valve.

Mitraclips are offered to treat mitral valve problems. This is a newer treatment.

The BHF has some further information about TAVIs.

I hope your father's procedure goes well.

That will make it much easier on him than open heart. I am in my 70s and had one in January. Was up and doing everything normally the next day except restricted on lifting much weight for a few weeks. I know others in my cardiac rehab class were much older and still did quite well.

I've just been on a cardio rehab course with a lady who was 87 and had just had valve replaced . Frankly I 'd have put her 10 years younger. She was back to walking the dog every day by the end of the course. And I don't think it was a little potter - the town where she lives means any walk will have been hilly. An inspiration .
