metoprolol / beta blocker withdrawal?? Need advice!

hi everyone,

I am a Male, Age 31. Started taking metoprolol after open heart surgery to close my VSD ( Heart Murmur).

Was on 25 mg of metoprolol tartrate, twice a day for a year.

Doctor / Cardiology said I can stop taking it so I did, but waned off it over two months.

I quit August 23rd. It’s been 5 days and I’ve been having massive heart rate increase and slight blood pressure increases.

Resting heart rate is 100 - 110 bpm. Standing is from 120-130bpm and walking is 130-160 bpm.

is this normal? Also have massive anxiety now too, which I didn’t really have before.

If anyone went through this, please give me some advice and love to know what others went through when they stopped taking Metoprolol / Beta Blockers!

Thank you

Your heart rate is certainly not 'normal' in my view and so you should be talking to your prescribing health professional who is qualified to give you the feedback and attention you may require. Or at the very least speak with a pharmacist. People on here can only give their experiences and that may not be directly applicable to your situation and in extreme could be detrimental to your well being should you choose to do the same.

Thank you and have a cardio appointment today. Hope it’s just effects of the adrenaline dumps due to quitting metoprolol since I was on it for so long.

Hi there,

I was on metoprolol for about 3 months and couldn’t tolerate it and also fell pregnant so stopped taking it as per cardiologist agreement.

I would recommend, as Lowerfield_no_more suggests, to contact your prescribing professional for advice regarding your symptoms.

Best wishes

My echo came back fine and ny EKG too… not sure why I have such a bad withdrawal from this!

Were you the same way? How long did it take for you to get your heart rate back down!

It took 9 days for my heart rate to come down enough for me to be sent for a CT angiogram.

I didn’t have the same kind of withdrawal symptoms but I was only on it for 3 months.

From my own personal experience, I would be inclined to say that it’s anxiety related but I’m not a medical professional.

Have you tried any meditation or breathing exercises to see if that helps?

I hope you feel better very soon 🤞🏼
