life with atrial flutter and cardiomyopathy.

I was diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy in 2014 following admission to hospital with atrial fibrillation. Was referred to Papworth cardiology and put on Adiziem. 2 further admissions for AF and put on Amioderone was referred for ablation at Papworth which was done 2015 and had 5 clear years AF free and my HCOM was monitored yearly and was back on Adiziem. Following return AF or was then determined as atrial flutter had another ablation 2022 which was succeful for 4 months then return to atrial flutter. 3rd ablation 4/3/24 successful 4 months now return to atrial flutter with high bpm155. Awaiting follow up face to face in 6 months with Electrophysiologist to determine plan. Find these waits really difficult. I am 76 and find fast pulse exhausting but do a daily walk and keep working on my art projects. My question is whether I would be considered for a pacemaker, am aware mostly used for slow pulse rate but more sophisticated now and have read they are used with fast pulse. Have been told my Arrythmia’s are complex but my HOCM is stable.

I was wondering just that. I’m not sure why someone didn’t recommend pace and ablate years ago. That said, I don’t know whether this strategy which can be very effective (see AF forum) in simple AF, is effective in HOCM.

Of course my opinion carries little weight since I am not a medic.

Thanks Jim, as non medics we pick up quite a bit of info. I discovered Bart’s AF site last night which appears to be about research so going to explore that. Such a shame we have to wait so long to see specialists a lot of anxiety can build up in that time.

Thank you. Have you considered spending £300 on an opinion only private appointment with a cardiologist?

Thanks for suggestion. I am a patient of 2 cardiologists at Papworth, one for the HOCM and the other an Electrophysiologist for ablation. I have 6 month wait to see the electro one after last ablation due to his work pressures. I have asked the Arrythmia nurses to ask him so he knows my request so I think I have to wait it out as don’t want to complicate things but it is a thought.
