unstable angina and air travel

I have been diagnosed with unstable angina. Had a stent in my left descending artery 4years ago. Just had an angiogram which shows all clear. Thinking of flying to the USA but it looks as though it’s not allowed with unstable angina. Any experience from other sufferers?

Hello,

I live with unstable vasospastic angina.

I have clear coronary arteries, my angina is due to transient constrictions of the coronary arteries.

I end up in hospital about twice a year for treatment with IV GTN.

I have been given permission to fly short haul by my Cardiologist.

Before flying I get a fit to fly letter from my GP, I use a portable oxygen concentrator during the flight.

A flight direct to the US would be too long for me, though I have wondered about going via Iceland.

My travel insurance is very expensive.

I suggest you discuss with your Cardiologist about whether it's okay for you to fly.

How have you been diagnosed with unstable angina?

thanks for the comments. Just waiting for a response from my cardiologist...unsure whether the diagnosis is established! I have an echo cardiogram booked: is that vital for diagnosis of unstable angina do you think?

The BHF website has this information about unstable angina.

"Unstable angina can feel different to your normal angina symptoms. It can happen even when you’re resting. Unstable angina feels more severe and lasts longer. Your symptoms might not improve when you rest or take medication.

If your symptoms don’t improve when you rest or take medication, you should call 999 immediately. "

Perhaps also give the BHF helpline a call and speak to one of the cardiac nurses.

Hi I've Microvascular Angina diagnosed by stress test chemically induced (not using a treadmill). My severe angina comes on when I’m not doing anything- reading, playing cards, stress, showering etc. I would be interested to know if that’s classed as unstable angina or stable ? How was it diagnosed with you, what criteria did they use? Until my diagnosis I would travel to the USA at least once per year now I’m feeling a bit nervous to go that far again 😔

Take care of your self

you don't have to fly - Cunard stil offer transatlantic cruise crossings from Southampton fur air fare prices. I travelled to New York last year and I’m travelling to Orlando in January by ship. Might be worth a Google?
