Acne on statins

I have noticed that since being put on statins (4 months now and moved from Atorvastatin to Simvastatin) that I have developed acne. I'm 64 and the original reading was 6.9. Anyone else experiencing this? Your replies I thank.

Hello :-)

I have never come across anyone getting this side effect from statins but maybe someone will see your post that has had the same issue if it is this tablet that is actually causing it

I must be honest and say I could imagine my reaction if I started getting acne once in my 60's but I would go and talk with my Doctor and see if they could work out why you are having this reaction and what they can do

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Hi Caringgirl1,

Never heard of this but yes, apparently an uncommon side effect after consulting dr Google. May not be all of them. Take care.

I have been on Statin for the same amount of time as you. No acne but I do get some aches and pains in my feet & legs. May I ask why they changed you to simvastatin? Thanks

I changed from atorvastatin to simvastatin because of stomach pain.

I was changed to Atorvastatin 9 months ago and every morning have low tummy pains which I can hear gurgling. Seems to ease when I get out of bed but never had anything like that when I was on Simvastatin, any other information/.

My pain was in my stomach. I've had a recurrent peptic ulcer so a lot of medicines affect it

And how do you manage for anticoagulation for afib.

I don't have any but after my heart attack I had clopidogrel and famotidine kept my stomach protected. They decided my arrhythmia wasn't AF.

Apparently this is quite common. My husband is on statins, Atorvastatin, and since starting them a year ago has experienced acne. It had gradually calmed down but he does still get breakouts every so often on his forehead. He has spoken to his GP and been told it’s not uncommon. I do sympathise, he hates it but you can get some very effective over the counter treatments from High Street stores. I found the sales assistants very helpful when I was looking for something to clear them up. I’d also say he’s the same age as you and was put on them at 6.3 (which he felt was borderline) but it brought this down to 4.6. So doing a pretty good job I suppose. Good luck in finding a remedy. Sue 🙏

The most reported side effect skin reaction of a rash, hives etc is to the blood pressure meds, I get both after a long period taking Ramipril and then Losartan, statins normally result in muscle aches and pains.

Hello Caringirl, I’m 64 too and started taking Atorvastatin around 5 or 6 years ago. My cholesterol value was 4.1 and fell to 2.6. I also developed acne, mainly on my chin, and put it down to shaving. I didn’t consider it might be linked to the statins. Funnily enough I was put on a short course of steroids (prednisolone) due to a shoulder injury and the acne totally disappeared - but returned within a few days of ending the medication.

I t oo changed f rom atorvastatin to simvastatin no problems at all. My skin was already extremely dry thanks to other meds but statins made no difference at all.
