Heart medication / Rosacea

I had two stents in November and have been on Clopidogrel , Bisoprolol and Rosuvastatine since.

I have a history of Rosacea going back ten years but which had become manageable and with no serious flare-ups in over two years.

In the last few weeks I have had two major flare ups which had to be treated with Cortisone. Puzzled as to the cause , research led me to discover that both Clopidogrel and Bisoprolol might well be the cause.

I know there are alternatives available and I am due to re-evaluate my medication in Sept , but I was wondering whether there were others who might have had a similar experience and what route did they go down.

my husband developed rosacea about eight or nine years after he started Clop. Which he is still on. He gets a medication (cream) from doc which helps. We didn’t put the R down to anything particular, just one of the things that life gives you!

Yes! And it's extremely annoying. Never had it until I started taking bisoprolol. Thats the only med I take apart from the contraception pill but I've had that for donkey's years and never a problem. I use Boots No7 Rosacea treatment. In a little green and white tube. Costs about a tennet but ask at the No7 counter. You use it for 30 days then stop for at least a week. I have a 2-3 week break from that ans then use Simple Niacinamide serum at night only and Simple cooling water face cream. Its very annoying and unsightly but I couldn't for the life of me find out what was causing it but it has to be the tablets. Also spf in the day as the sun sometimes makes mine worse.

Have you spoke with your doctor about an alternative to bisoprolol ?

No. I was prescribed it at 36 weeks pregnant back in 2019 and have stuck with it since. Plus I have asthma thats controlled well so I'm not sure how I'd get on with another beta blocker.

I have taken bisoprolol for about 10months I didn’t link the two as my rosacea seems worse but I weaned myself off due to other problems this week withdrawls not to brilliant my face is really flushed made worse by the weather.

My response will likely not be helpful, but for what it’s worth:

I was diagnosed with rosacea on my birthday in 2001. The doctor described it as “textbook” example. I used prescribed facial washes, shampoos, etc. for weeks and took doxycycline tablets. Eventually, I had laser treatments which really helped.

My HA was in March 2022, and I was prescribed 75mg. Metoprolol as one of my medications. The rosacea had already resurfaced to some extent by that time—before the Metoprolol medication. I now have some breakouts from time to time (pustules, redness, etc. ). I never realized that the medication could make this worse.

I seem to react some to stress/anxiety, high temperatures, and even washing my face. I would be interested in hearing more from you as you learn about possible links to your meds or any possible treatments, etc.

Best wishes in resolving your rosacea. I can say that the laser treatments work well, but they do not last forever, and insurance often will not pay for the treatments. One doctor did tell me that bacteria is involved in rosacea, so a slow-acting, low-dose antibiotic is often prescribed too. That is why I took doxycycline for several weeks prior to laser treatments. ❤️

My triggers had always been a combination of sun and sweat. Due to the precautions I was taking I hadn't experienced a full flush for years. I always knew when my rosacea was about to be triggered due to localised irritation , usually around the eyes , which I immediately treated with a topical hydrocortisone cream which always seemed to stop an attack in its tracks.

Like I said , I had two severe attacks in quick succession , both after sun exposure whilst gardening. I had followed my normal protocols ; plenty of spf , baseball cap , dark wraparound sunglasses , but to no avail , the attacks were brutal and required cortisone and the symptoms were markedly different to anything I had experienced before. Hence my discovery that it was most likely the medication that I was on that would account for this evolution in my rosacea.

I will be discussing it all with my heart surgeon in September and will post here anything I think people might find interesting.
