Anyone else with eye deterioration?

Sharpglo profile image

Hello there, just wondered if anyone else has/is experiencing any problems with eyes. I seem to have a permanent red colour circling my eye on shades plus blurred vision. Only had an eye check a few months prior to the heart trouble and had 20/20 vision. Thanks

it's not something that crops up on here very often so don't think it is particularly related to your heart condition. As someone who has had his fair share of eye problems (age related not heart) I would urge you to go and get them checked ASAP, preferably at an optician or Eye A&E. If you start to get areas of no vision (like curtains drawing) it's an emergency visit.

It's probably nothing to worry about but you can't be too careful for obvious reasons.

My eyesight went down hill fast just before and during my hospital stay, before i went in i was 20/20 - when i was discharged I had to hold my phone at arms length to read it and i was struggling with light sensitivity so i booked an eyetest with the add on of full eye health check. The high blood pressure from heart probs have damaged my vessels in the back of my eyes so i had some bleeds, and the light sensitivity is a mix of medication and the fact my eyes are now rugby ball shaped. They wrote me perscription and sent the results to my GP so he can keep an EYE on it.

Every case is different but that was what i was told after the full eye check, i suggest you get one done. Ive got two pairs of glasses now and i look like a nob head in them... Joy. :D

You need to get this checked out today. My sister suddenly got blurred vision in one eye and the optician sent her to Moorfields with a covering letter. She had surgery for a detached retina the next day. Someone else got red spots and streaks which were caused by a retinal bleed. These are sight threatening conditions so to be safe you need to get it checked NOW!

Yes, get to an optician immediately or if there is an eye unit at a hospital you can easily reach then get there and go TODAY!

It sounds like a detached retina but obviously different drugs affect people in different ways so could be related to heart medication but its best to get it checked.

Yes! Me too. I had photophobia every day since my OHS for four weeks, then I had a hemiplegic migraine (with stroke symptoms). No head ache just my eyes, zigzags blurred vision, and face and arm paralysis). Also my glasses don't feel right anymore, the prescription seems "off" but it was ok before my op. I'm only on 5 weeks post surgery, so I'm waiting for my eyes to "settle" before having another eye test. I'm sure everything needs time to calm down, and eyes are very sensitive. I even read one woman's eyes had a lower prescription following op!!,😆 Hope that happens to me

Years ago before heart problems started but after major surgery I was back and forth to the optician several times until I saw a different man who told me you shouldn't change yoru glasses for at least 3 months after surgery to get all traces of anaesthetic out of your system.

Hi my eyes have got much worse since my HA and I get funny vision on the side and flashing lights

I also get zigzags and go totally blind for about an hour but my eyes are so different now I was told there is a nerve in the chest which has something to do with the eyes - not sure if that is correct but when you have heart trouble this can be effected

What??? he needs to go and get them checked ASAP as the more sensible replies have stated!

Are you saying my comment is not sensible?

Stentsandrun profile image
Stentsandrun in reply toZed1063

I was suggesting the only sensible answer is to get them checked ASAP. Never heard of a nerve in the chest that is related to the eyes TBH. I have had quite a few problems with my eyes since having my CHD diagnosis and been assured they are absolutely nothing to do with it.

This site is for chatting about our experiences and this is what I read on this site, if you go back through the post I am sure you will be able to read it to. I have in NO way told the person not to get them checked or said I am a specialist, I gave my experience on what has happened to me since my HA. So, reading your comment, you must be correct you have been assured they are absolutely nothing to do with it, but seems strange you have had quite a few problems with you eye since your CHD! I would seek a second opinion!

Calm down! I am not suggesting you told them not to get them checked! The problems with my eyes are due to nothing, sadly, other than natural ageing, I can assure you I have them checked regularly and do not need a second opinion. There is no association with CHD and things like detached retinas, I have first hand experience of this and have been assured of the fact by many specialists. As I said the important thing is for the OP to get them checked, as inferring that is something to do with heart disease is highly unlikely to be the case.

By the way if you get flashing lights it is possible it is something called Posterior Vitreous detachment which I am sure you may be aware of but if they continue then it may be worth getting them checked again.

I do not need to calm down I am not stressed. I think your comment was rude and unnecessary, referring to mine a not sensible. We are on here to try to help and reassure each other, I did not say he has a detached retina or any condition actually, I stated that I had been informed that is all, but again with your excellent knowledge you state it is unlikely to be linked to the heart condition. Have a fantastic day and thank you for your excellent medical opinion and judgement.

You could be having T.I.A's ( mini strokes) Have you told any Dr's that you lose your sight for it to return an hour later ?I've had a few T.I.A's and it started with the zig zags at the side of my eye then it was like a roller blind slowly being pulled over my left eye. I had no vision in that eye.

I was sent straight to hospital for a doppler scan. Luckily I had no blockages.

It's not normal to temporarily lose your vision without an explanation.

I have had similar - temporary (less than a minute) loss of vision over part of one eye - sometimes a few a week, sometimes none for months. Not the same as the zigzags with migraine that I very occasionally had all my life. These started a year after OHS. Doppler scan on carotid arteries showed nothing. Awaiting results of brain scan. No other symptoms except pulsatile tinnitus for last year (which may or may not be connected). How long does your vision loss last? Have they suggested how you can prevent it happening, prescribed any meds?

Have you had your eyes looked at in respect of this?

Zed1063 profile image
Zed1063 in reply toStentsandrun

Yes by the doctor and the opticians and just change my prescription for my glasses

Good, that's what the OP needs to do.

I see you are in New Zealand where it is evening now. Did you go and get checked out? Time is critical if there is a serious issue developing.

Thank you all so much for your feedback and caring. My eyes are not bloodshot as such just the rims red and vision blurry more when on iPad and tv. I don’t think Dr could do anything, sure I don’t have a retina pull or the like. Thanks again

I still say go to an optician to be sure. It might be a waste of time but if not 👩‍🦯 ! Don't chance it!

sorry I’m late to reply, been without internet. I lost the sight suddenly in one eye just over a year ago. I went straight to the optician who said it was macular degeneration. She referred me to another optician who said it was the same condition as my heart, which is microvascular disorder. Nothing can be done to restore the sight in that eye. I’m awaiting an appointment at the eye hospital to see if anything can be done to save the sight in my other eye. Please don’t delay, get to a good optician as soon as possible.

I get very dry skin around my eyes have to put a small amount of vasaline around them. Also my eyelashes have thinned and hair I think it's due to the blood thinners, Apixaban
