Pacemaker check travel insurance

Hi All

Having my 6 week pacing check next week and booked to go to Portugal the following week. My insurers asking for Fit to Travel from my GP and My Cardiac consultant.

My GP say they don't do FTT anyone know how to get a written FTT from consultant please ?

My husband now saying should not have booked before check up ahhh

The only way of knowing whether the consultant who is in charge of your care will provide the necessary documents is to contact to him/her through his medical secretary, who will be likely responsible for organising admin tasks like this. I suggest you ring your hospital soonest.

it’s been years since doctors (or at least gp’s) were able to do so and I’m a bit surprised that an insurer has asked!

Everytime I fly I need to use an oxygen concentrator during the flight. I am required by the airline to provide a fit to fly letter in order to be allowed to fly.

My GP just provided me with a Fit to fly letter last week. He just altered the date on a pre prepared letter kept in my electronic medical records, printed the letter out, signed and stamped it with the surgery's address.

GP practices usually charge about £30 for a Fit to fly letter.

Haven't been abroad for a few years but all I needed was the printed "passport" for my pacemaker which was provided by the hospital. The insurance company didn't need it but the airport security did .

I’m going away on 4th May two days after 6 week check up and phoned my insurer to inform them now had a pacemaker and they took details but didn’t want letter saying fit to fly

Thanks for the info. that's interesting. I think my insurers must be particular but thet have covered me for several other medical conditions already

I think the fit to fly letter requirement is because you've not yet had your first check up after having your pacemaker fitted. I would also check your airlines T&C's to see if they also require a fit to fly letter, it'll be in the small print.

I'd phone your cardiologist secretary and ask how you go about getting this letter urgently. It should be a simple thing to arrange but they might not issue the letter until after your check up but it should be simple enough

That's understandable, I'd probably panic but I really do think it's an easy fix if all is ok at your pacemaker check up & the cardiologist/secretary are on the ball. Our experience is most, if not all secretary's are really good at getting this sort of thing sorted. Tbh, it's worthwhile looking around to see if you can get another insurer but I think you would have to tell them that your own insurer has asked for the letter just to make sure you're telling them everything. Good luck, I love Portugal so I'm very envious right now!!
