My husband has recently been diagnosed with ARVC, currently only on medication at present. He may need an ICD in the future and we are worried he may have to give up his job as a builder due to the power tools etc, anyone give advice on this? Also we have booked to go abroad for the first time in years,(before any ICD implant) could really do with a list of Travel insurers, he is under 50, thank you

New diagnosis and Travel insurance
Hi. I recently spoke to Avanti for an upcoming holiday, they were very helpful. Unfortnately, I can't go on holiday now as I am on an active waiting list for a valve replacement....but, Avanti were prepared to insure me with my current condition. On another note, my Brother had an ICD fitted in his 20's, hes now in his late 40's and has had minimal issues with his. Best of luck to you and your Husband x
Thank you for your reply
Was your brother able to continue doing everything he did before? My husbands job is very manual and has a very active lifestyle, he’s worried he will have to give it all up, mostly worried about his job
My brother carried on with his regular lifestyle. He works in IT so I cant advise on a manual job. My brother was told to just manage risk...as in, if he wanted to go rock climbing he had to think about the possibility of the device kicking in which if he was half way up a rock would be dire. That kind of thing. Im sure your husband's consultant will be able to give you sound advice on work etc x
P.s it was Staysure who quoted my insurance btw, not Avanti!
Look to the right of your post and there are a few related posts. ' Which Travel Insurance?' is a regular question (sometimes up to 3 x per week) so do a search on the site too. Staysure gets a regular mention but I have no experience of them.
Thank you
I’ve used Staysure and AllClear. We’ve recently used AllClear for both of us as my husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year. It was eye-wateringly expensive compared to just me with heart failure but is for 12 months.
I should have said that our previous insurer who we had been with for over 20 years declined cover once we had severe health issues.
Good morning somersetgeordie. You should find that if your husband is fit and well he should be able to continue with his job after a couple of months allowing the wires to settle down and not get detached from the pacemaker. He might be offered a cardio rehabilitation course to build up his fitness after the operation and I would ask on other pacemaker groups about the working with tools. They are only small magnets so I don't think they will be a problem. Perhaps double check with his pacemaker consultant. Best of luck Brian
Hi I’m not sure who would be a good company. But I know one to avoid and that is good to go appalling customer service when you need to claim ended up going through an ombudsman and it took nine months. Good to go. Is the company. Avoid at any cost
