AF on holiday

I am a long-time AF sufferer (in the genes - thanks Dad!). I've had 4 ablations and 7 cardio versions. When I moved from London, I was referred to Papworth and, after tests, they were ready to try another CV. But, amazingly, on the day, my heart was back in sinus rhythm and there it has stayed for nearly 2 years. I was discharged by the cardiologist in early 2023. Unfortunately, about a month ago, I had some chest pains Or rather a dull ache on the left side and ended up going to A&E. (I called 111, they told me to speak to my GP within an hour, but I couldn't get through that quickly). And an ECG revealed that the AF was back to being persistent. Other tests (chest infection, heart attack etc) all came back negative. I've since had an appointment and another ECG with the GP and managed to persuade her to refer me back to Papworth. Now I am waiting for an appointment.

I am on apixaban, irbesartan and bisoprolol (1.25mg).

What is worrying me is that I am going on Holiday on Monday and it will be a full-on busy trip with a fair amount of walking (not hiking - I know my limits!). Apart from the occasional chest ache, I am more breathless than usual. Just wondering if anyone had any advice for managing the trip.

(I have told my travel insurer about the recent hospital visit and the outstanding referral).

Thanks in advance.

Not sure I can offer any advice on your trip other than being aware of your own body and limitations and resting when you can. I’m also on Apixaban and started on Bisoprolol a couple of months ago. I was experiencing breathless before being started on the Bisoprolol. GP felt my AF wasn’t well controlled. To be honest, my Consultant hadn’t really explained the type of AF I have - now know it’s permanent. I’m much better in terms of the breathlessness and this has reduced my anxiety. I still get periods of tiredness that I need to accept and not overdo it. I hope you can manage to relax and enjoy your holiday, stressing will probably make you feel worse.
