Hello. I am 3 weeks after open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve. I am still wearing compression socks but for the last 3 days one of my ankles has been swallen. Is this normal weeks after surgery? Getting a GP appointment is almost impossible so wanted to know if anyone else experienced this. Thank you.

Hiya, so glad to hear your recovery is going ok. I wld definitely persist with the G.P or do you have a cardiac rehab nurse - you could contact? Are you on diuretics? I was on Furosemide for the first 6 wks post op as had a real issue with fluid after my surgery. (Resembled the Michelin Man) for the first few days after my valve replacement.

Also, so important at this stage to try and rest - with your feet up. Hope you manage to get an appointment. Take care.

They took the diuretics away before I left the hospital as they said I was loosing weight. I was hoping that the swelling would go down but is staying the same now for 3 days. I might contact the rehabilitation nurse as they left me their contact details. I will continue to try to rest with the feet up and hopefully it will go down. Thank you for your help.

Hi I’ve recently had OHS it took a while for my ankles to go down I tried to sit with feet elevated as much as possible. I was also on water tablets for a few weeks. Hopefully you can get sorted ❤️

Thank you. I am trying to sit with my feet elevated. It seems that the swelling is slowly going down. Hopefully it will get better.

I wouldn't worry about it but try and keep your feet up and definitely get in touch with the rehab team asap
