Aktiia wrist blood pressure monitor
Tried and sent back as found inaccurate when compared with my Omron.
Over 15 years ago I brought my first BP monitor.- a wrist one. The readings seemed inconsistent so I visited my GP. She compared mine with her mercury sphygmomanometer and every reading - resting, standing and after some gentle exercise - and all were different. She said she was against them as around the wrist area you may get hardening of the arteries over 40 with diabetes/smoking/alcohol consumption over guidelines having an effect. She wrote a quick note to say it was "not fit for purpose" and I took it back. I got a full refund but got an arm cuff Omron there (Boots).
I got one about 18 months ago as the cuff readings were making me anxious. I did quite a bit of research as it’s not cheap but the fact it synced with a cuff monthly and the clinical trials etc swayed me.
For me, and my anxiety issues the cuff was causing, it was the right solution, it took away all of the worry and made a huge difference. The readings averaged about 5 lower on both sys and dias, but my 24 hr monitor from hospital also had shown this so it gave me confidence of a degree of accuracy.
It’s not perfect and you need to consciously keep hand still for few mins to trigger readings sometimes. It’s interesting to see how it varies through the day and see patterns.
After about 8 months continuous wear with higher days and lower days, the monthly average was about the same and so I now just sync monthly and wear for few days to check it’s same.
If it’s just for convenience and you don’t really have issues with taking readings it’s maybe not worth it as novelty could wear off, but for me and my situation it serves it purpose brilliantly.
I have considered getting one but delayed until I hear really positive reviews on them for people with persistent AFib.
I’m not expecting super accuracy from it, but consistent measurable inaccuracy would be fine when calibrated. One response above suggests that this is possible.
However, I am persistent AFib and so I don’t know if the consistency will be there , it’s hard enough to treat the cuff BP monitor as consistently accurate.
If you do get one, please let us know how it works for you.
Hi Steverich9,A cuff monitor is always better than a wrist one, I haven't heard the make that you mention, but Omron is good, it's what they use in surgeries and pharmacies.
Hi Steverich9, I bought an Aktiia a couple of years ago but unfortunately I couldn't pair it with my very old phone running android 7.0. I then discovered that Android 8 is the oldest version supported, so that's one point to watch out for. It felt like a well built product and Aktiia seem to have put a lot of effort into the calibration with the supplied cuff. I have kept an eye on their published papers and reviews which are generally positive, but I can't be bothered to update my phone until something else breaks!
