L-carnitine: Has anyone tried l... - British Heart Fou...
L-carnitine
Hi there, yes I found out about it through some research when I was in hospital. The doctors and consultants won't tell you to take or not take it. They have to recommend medicine.
I spent some time with a nutritionist over the last year and she highly recommend it. She is very well regarded.
Also, Taurine, ubiquinol, and I have a multi vitamin heart powder mix called cardio miracle.
It's best to speak to a nutritionist yourself and find out specifically what will work for you and your body.
The ones I have above are general and will benefit anyone with heart issues. They help promote the hearts recovery.
You need to double check whether your prescribed medications have the potential of interacting with any supplement you read about before trying it this can be done very easily using a drug checker list , and get the go ahead from your GP or Specialist if you have any medical condition. You also need to be sure that it's appropriate with your whole medical history and current symptoms not just for your heart.
Supplements can be good for some but harmful in other situations and for certain people.
They are still chemicals that affect the body and have their own set of side effects even if you can buy them over the counter so people with a health condition need to be more careful than those whom are generally healthy and don't take necessary prescription medication.
Thanks for the reply Absolutely I will definitely be speaking to my heart nurses before and if I start taking any new supplements, I was just asking if anyone had heard about this and had tried it.
Are you on warfarin , other blood thinning, anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication? L- Carnitine isn't recommended with blood thinners because it increases the bleeding time.
You are recommended not to take L-Carnitine within 6 hours of anticoagulants and antiplatelets to reduce the chance of bleeding or bruising.
It can also cause this with other medications that increase bleeding time .
There are other medications it's not suitable with.
It's not appropriate for people to use whom have hypothyroidism or whom are on thyroid medication.
It can cause stomach symptoms and a fishy odour to the skin. If the fishy odour occurs you are advised to stop using it as it can be an indicator of a negative effect on heart function.
Drugs checkers also warn patients with medicated heart complaints not to take D-Carnitine or DL-Carnitine.
It's one of those supplements that I read positive things about, looked at the potential for side effects with my medications and other health issues, and chose to act with caution and give it a miss.
I also always double check my supplements facts and don't just rely on a " Yes" from a Nurse , Pharmacist or Doctor whom doesn't have experience in using supplements for complimentary care, as, from experience over the years, I've realised that they often say yes without checking the facts first , much like the general public, assuming as it's an OTC supplement from a health shop its unlikely to do any harm, unfortunately that often isn't true.
Hope that helps, Bee
I’ve been taking this since Christmas and it seems to help with my optical migraine and no ill effects .
