Facial swelling

Had Bypass 8 yearsago after heart attack and was put on ramipril amongst other drugs. After 8 years suddenly developed facial swelling arund lips and tongue. Taken off Ramipril and placed on Losartan. Any body else had problems with ramipril causing swellings. Does it get better after switching meds.

Sometimes our bodies suddenly start to react differently to medication. For many years I was fine with the antibiotic Amoxicillin, but suddenly when I was prescribed it, I came out in red itchy spots head to toe. It may be that your body has just had enough of Ramipril.

What I can say is that I was originally put on Ramipril, then moved to Amlodipine (a horror drug for me) and then onto Losartan and I've had no issues with Losartan for the past 12 years. For me it works well and I hope it does for you.

I was on Ramipril for about a year with no problem then suddenly had a rash appear on both arms and legs then on my abdomen which seemed to be spreading, I stopped taking the Ramipril, my BP is normally normal but can soar without stress to 190 +, and the rash rapidly disappeared, now been on Losartan for around a year and started getting skin irritation, I suppose that some people are sensitive to medication but the signs of adverse reaction don’t immediately appear. Perhaps cycling between meds every 6 months or so would solve the problem, but you need a doctor that is open to that, mine aren’t.

I had the most horrendous and continuous cough on Ramipril. Dr even said it was psychosomatic, idiot, just because he didnt know how to stop my cough.I only found out on this forum that loads of people had this side effect.

Needless to say coughs completely gone, thank goodness.

Hope you get to the bottom of this.

Wouldnt recommend it personally.

I had exactly the same issue as yours (angioedema, face and tongue swelling) 2 years ago after taking the same set of meds for 8 years. I was changed from Ramipril to Losartan and the swelling stopped but I had a bad gastric reactions to Losartan and came off that after another 6 months. I was left taking neither Ramipril nor Losartan for a few months and the swelling came back. I was then put on Dapagliflozin but at the same time was diagnosed with Polymyalgia reumatica and started a steroid, Prednisolone 25mg, to deal with this. I had no swelling until I reduced down to 2mg of steroid 10 months later and had mild swelling again. The steroid could have been suppressing the angioedema. After a recent private consultation with a recommended Cardiologist he has indicated that I could and maybe should go back onto Ramipril under guidance from the local Cardiac nurse team that I am now referred to. My angioedema may not have been caused by Ramipril. Good luck with your symptoms and happy to keep in touch as we seem to have a similar issue. I will follow your profile to pick up on any more of your posts. To keep a record of my symptoms I started photographing facial changes with my mobile to record date and time of the angioedema symptoms. I also noted dates of all changes in meds to set alongside the changes in symptoms. The GP and consultant have been updated on this record through the changes which has probably helped in eliminating some of the causes.
