I’m not on this, but no one has replied to you so here goes.

If you do not take steps to reduce your blood pressure you are at risk of strokes / heart attack which would presumably be worse than any side effects from medication.

Have a look at the website of Blood Pressure UK, the specialist charity. Maybe give them a ring.

You may feel a little strange at first but not everyone does, It’s an odd drug and can take time for you to adjust. I take 1.25mg daily for afib, when first prescribed I was started on 2.5mg then 5mg but it had to be reduced as I could not tolerate that dose. See how it goes for you, give it time, if you feel tired rest if you can, any major side effects should be reported to your GP. Not everyone gets the side effects listed and yes they sound scary but it is an effective drug, nothing lost in giving it a try.

Hiya, I started taking this after my mitral valve replacement op, in an effort to calm my erratic heart rate.

In hospital my surgeon started me on it in the morning and my already low blood pressure dropped through the floor, causing dizziness and associated side effects. It also gave me oral thrush for about the first month (but in addition, I had been intubed from surgery for over 12 hours - so that may too have contributed).

Once home, my Cardiologist suggested that I take it at bedtime, so that if I do feel light-headed, I’m laying down anyway. This works much better for me. It’s difficult to pinpoint any other side effects - as I was started on a cocktail of medication in hospital all at the same time.

I hope you’re ok with it.

Hello :-)

There are so many of us taking this medication on here and it will not harm you but to leave your BP so high eventually could

All medications come with a list of side effects that when we have read them we are so full of fear it makes quite a few of us worry but they have to list everything that has ever been reported even if just a few say it affected them that way

They have started you on a low dose so hopefully you will not get any side effects and the way I think about taking my meds as I have a meds fear is telling myself I just have to take them for today and then I tell myself the same the next day and so on

I hope you will give them a try and if you find they do not suite you but hopefully they will but there are others your Doctor could try you on but they also will come with a list of side effects so worth giving these a go first :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Hello :-)

Glad everything is going ok so far with the med :-)

I am really not sure if it causes any feelings as you have described personally I would not think it would but then again you need a Doctor to answer and sorry you have to wait a week to be able to speak to one but if you have any concerns then phone 111 and see what they say

Let us know how you get on :-) x

I’ve recently started at 1.25 then a week later to 2.5. If possible I take pills with food and I’ve not had any side effects. BP noticeably lower overnight but I’m also on Ramipril. If you don’t try it the alternative may outdo the side effects and that’s not good.

I’m on the same dose- not had any problems with side effects

We’re all different. However I’ve been taking it for just over 2 years and never had any side effects.

I started on 2 5 mg, reduced to 1.25 mg 2 years later. To start with I was tired but that wore off very quickly, I get cold hands and feet, abd sometimes a runny nose, but that's all.

I have been on 1.25 since Oct 2023 for ectopic heartbeat. No serious side effects except my nose runs constantly. Just water. I did Google this and it can be a side effect of taking beta blocker. Have you mentioned this to your GP? I’ve not seen my doctor since October and didn’t want to bother him with this.

No, I haven't spoken to my doctor, I read it in the patient information leaflet so I realised it was just a nuisance side effect. To me the side effects would have to be worse before it outweighed the benefits. To be honest my GPs are not very helpful when it comes to side effects, so I'll only contact them if I really have to.

I’ve been on 1.25mg for around 9 months now since my OHS. I can’t say with certainty that I suffer from any side effects but I do get very tired on occasion but I put that down to still recovering as it is said some of us can take a year to get over surgery. My BP is now well controlled as is my RHR both of which are vital to my health.

The risks to your health if you don’t take the medicine are far worse than any impact from any side effects.

Hi

I have been taking bisoprolol for over two years now following heart attack. Prior to this I had very high blood pressure like yourself and tried other blood pressure meds which I couldn’t take because of side effects. I am on a low dose 1.25mg twice a day morning and night. I also suffer from high anxiety and have found that bisoprolol has not only kept my blood pressure well under control but has a calming effect too. Side effects are minimal - I occasionally feel a bit dizzy if I stand up too quickly but other than this I have been fine. Everyone is different and it can be a case of trial and error. If you have bad side effects speak to your GP and ask to try something else. It is very important to get that BP under control. Best wishes to you.

I take this ..but seeing as I take 10 tablets a day…very difficult to decide if any of them are causing any side effects…

adiwillow profile image

Are you sure the 200 BP wasn't a spike from anxiety? I have white coat syndrome and basically the same thing happened to me. Had my BP done at pharmacy and it was 150/95 and again at the doctors where it spiked 200/110. However, i have since got a BP monitor at home where my blood pressure is 110/65 average.

That aside, i was also put on bisoprolol and ramipril. I was nervous and anxious about taking them and honestly, there was no need. I felt no different whatsoever. My HR is about 10 beats lower from the ramipril though.

Hotie profile image
Hotie in reply toadiwillow

Yes the white coat syndrome was mentioned, will buy BP home monitor if any problem with med.med.Happy to hear all OK with you xx

adiwillow profile image
adiwillow in reply toHotie

Thanks.. it's kind of okay with me, yes.. my A+E visit following the BP spike resulted in a finding of WPW syndrome. However, it's good these things are found. I think that is why i'm now on the Bisoprolol and ramipril.

An approved home blood pressure machine can be bought for £25, or £40-50 if you want one which syncs with a phone app.

That was my worry as I suffer from Raynards!

adiwillow profile image
adiwillow in reply toHotie

ahhh and me. Sorry, i forgot to mention that above, but yes, if you have raynauds it makes it worse. I now get numb and white toes where i never did before. My hands and fingers are worse too.

Been on 2.5mg Bisoprolol for nearly 6 months now. Just had it increased to 3.75mg. Blood Pressure is now stable but I take my own readings at home as my BP always goes through the roof at the GP's. Strongly advise you invest in your own monitor as it will certainly give you a better idea as to where your at. Surprised they haven't put you in something like Ramipril as well. I take that, 1.25mg, alongside my Biso.

I never read those leaflets. IF I do you can guarantee I'll be just waiting for something to happen.I was given it after a heart attack. It made me very very tired. Tried it at night- still too tired to do anything at all so it was changed. Side effects usually wear off after a couple of weeks but they are nothing that will harm you long term. With BP Like that you must have medication. Undiagnosed high BP is the biggest killer there is. So do try it. If you're not happy it can be changed. ALL tablets have side effects at first.

Very wise advice thank you.you.Started last night very tired today, will continue till I see Dr x 22wks.

If you do have problems, don't wait that long for GP. I would probably help if in the week before you speak to the GP if you take your own BP relaxed at home, 3 times a day for a week so he can work out an average. BP machines are available at every chemist and very easy to use. Mine's always sky high at the doctor's but perfect at home.

I have been on this and Lisinopril since my HA and Stent end of July. Recently my BP has shot up to avg of 140/96 but this last week twice at 230/102. I'm at the docs in the morning and she is upping my Lisinopril by 5mg to 15mg. No side effects from my current meds.

I am on 10mg a day. I split it 5mg morning and evening. I was soooo tired when I started taking it but it doesn't affect me now. I also started on a low dose and then was prescribed higher and higher doses. My heart conditions are under control but I do get tired quickly. Not blaming meds but medical conditions.....and husband.😴
