Wow! Major psychological barrier smashed.

Wasn’t sure if I should post on here? I didn’t want to appear smug! But then, if I can offer moral support to others, I guess it can’t do any harm!

I had three stents in November and like most I found it very hard to accept and believe that it happened to me! This week I attended my second of a six week rehab program. It’s been so beneficial in many aspects, mostly for getting over the psychological hurdles I had subconsciously put in place! One such hurdle was, would it be safe to jog so early in my recovery? So, during the session I asked if I could jog slowly rather than doing the walking around the room, which I subsequently started to do. I felt good, but I guess I got carried away as one of the instructors got me to check my heart rate! Needless to say I’d gone way above my target rate. After slowly bringing the pace down, my heart rate dropped back to acceptable limits!!

At the end of the session I asked if it would ok to start jogging again? Yes, “ as long as you keep within target range “ came the reply. So , this morning I have just finished a 2 mile slow jog!

I hope this helps others out there, who might be in that dark place at the moment! I was in that place, but now I can see light at the end of the tunnel!

As a footnote. If you are offered the rehab course and have doubts as to its benefits! Just give it a try, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Congratulations! It's great to get back on track after a heart attack and / or angioplasty!

I couldn't wait to get back to parkrun after my angioplasty in December and I've joined the BHF 'Heart Runners' team for the Cardiff Half in October!

Keep it up... do you parkrun? if not, you should!

Well done! If you have been a regular runner or exerciser it’s a massive blow to think you might not be able to do the same ever again isn’t it? I also had 3 stents and found the rehab classes really valuable. Like you I also got carried away from time to time and had to tone it down a bit! But I was determined to get back to some running and embarked on a couch to 5k even though I felt like I would be perfectly capable of doing the distance straight off. I was just trying to be cautious. But I’m now back to doing Park Run and some other runs which I really look forward to. So keep up the good work!

Brilliant, thank you for posting. Encourages others to undertake the rehab. I unfortunately missed out on rehab as it wasn't on offer when I had my heart attacks during COVID. I now attend a local leisure centre which offers various classes and a gym. I've built up my confidence with exercise there with advice I'm able to monitor my heart rate and interact with others . Done wonders for my mental health.

That's great news, I am so pleased you are back doing something you love.I am so jealous when I read about other people's rehab mine was nothing like that due to the virus we can't mention. I had a video link, that hardly worked, once a week just boring exercises and no one to check blood pressure, heart rate etc or to ask questions to. I really feel I missed out on something very worthwhile. Char
