If you believe you are experiencing muscle and/or joint pain caused by Atorvastatin (which are listed as common side effects) you should discuss this with your prescribing health professional like your GP who should be able to offer an alternative statin which will hopefully produce no side effects. But if you are ultimately found to be statin intolerant and your lipid profile is considered to be outside of what is considered to be acceptable should you find it necessary to stop taking statins, other forms of medication are available for your GP to prescribe for lipid management. So I suggest you ask for a medication review and explore the options available to you.

Hello :-)

I was put on 80mg and could not tolerate it they dropped me to 40mg and I am fine and so is my cholesterol

Maybe it is something you could ask if they thought you would be ok to take a lower dose and there are different statins they can try you on but make an appointment and tell them and hopefully they will sort this out :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Yes. Right up to the stage where I could hardly walk. After 2 weeks off them I could walk again. Don't be fobbed off like I was. I am now on 5mg rosuvastatin without much pain.

I take 20mg of that one and took the tablet in the morning. Had awful leg pain and someone on here told me to try taking it at night. Which I did do and it has made quite a difference. Maybe worth a try, if your taking it in the morning. Regards Dee.

Have you checked that the antibiotic you were taking is not one of those listed as not advisable to take with Atorvastatin?

Hi, After having my Angiogram. I was told by the doctor I would be on Atorvastatin 80mg. I said I'm not taking 80mg. I take 40mg. I started taking them Nov'21. I've had no side affects.

There would have been a reason for suggesting that you increase your Atorvastatin dose from 40mg to 80mg, and that reason very likely arose from what was found during your angiogram when it was then believed to be in your best interests to better manage your lipid profile and further reduce your heart health risk. I assume you have accepted the increased risk if you didn't at first try the 80mg dose to see if it brought side effects. I take 80mg Atorvastatin after it was recommended after my HA nearly six years ago, up from 40mg, and I don't get any side effects, probably like many others, although of course some do at this max dose.

Hello, Truesta123 I take avarstine and have no side effects, but was initially started on simvastatin which gave me aches and pain, never felt anything like it. Some people can be intolerant to one or the over. Talk too your Doctor.

I thought I'd got away with no side-effects from statins, writing the pain in my heels off to the after-effects of the sciatica I'd had. In a post here about the size of the Atorvastatin tablets, not the effect, someone mentioned their "Achilles problem" and Google showed me that the side-effect called "Tendonitis" was better known as "Achilles Heel". The doctor took me off 80Mg for a month, to check the effect, and it improved a lot. He's now put me back on 40Mg and some of the progress is reversed but, fortunately, not all. I'd like to get the doctor to experiment with alternatives, but when blood-tests have to be booked 4 weeks in advance, it makes changes harder to arrange

I was prescribed Sinvistatin several years ago and persevered with them for almost 2 years before discussing leg aches with GP. I came off these. After a few years another GP asked me if I woud try Rosuvastatin 10mg. I have tollerated this but lately leg aches have started again. I am wondering if it is because of a different brand/supplier from the pharmacy. Anyone else experienced side effects from different supplier?

Doctor prescribed statins for me when lipids were in the danger zone. I had issues with it, including tremendous joint and muscle pain. The doctor prescribed a different statin. Same problems, so I stopped it in my own. Bad idea. After I developed a significant clot in my widow maker artery (it’s called that nickname for a reason…and I call it that to remind myself how lucky I am to be alive) and I received a stent, the surgeon insisted that I go on (injectable) Repatha. No issues with it at all, and lipid levels were already remarkably amazing at my one month check. If you try all of the marvelous suggestions given to you here and statins still don’t help you, ask your doctor to tell you about the other options. There are a few other good choices out there now.
