Do you mean after having had it closed or living with a hole in the heart ?I had probably had a hole in my heart for many years and only when it was suspected of causing an embolism and then a TIA was it thought best to close it.. I had lived a full life until the age of about 70 at that point and nobody medical had spotted I had a hole in my heart.

My sister was born with a hole in her heart. She's never had any meds for it or surgery & she's now in her late 60's. I would think whether or not you can live a long time with it would depend on many different factors. Your friend would be better off asking their gp as they will know the medical history.
