Herbal Tea?

Does anyone know if its OK to drink herbal tea (peppermint, mango, sleep tea?) Because I've read that some supplements are not to be taken when on medication.

Not sure if this applies to herbal tea however.

Thank you

Hello :-)

I think herbal tea is ok but I would check with your chemist as it is true some supplements etc should not be mixed with the medications we take

Give them a ring they will soon let you know if it is ok :-) x

Whatever medication you are taking could be a key factor. I do wonder how a pharmacist or any other medical practitioner can be expected to advise on every combination of medicine and supplement, especially when several are involved. My surgeon didn't caution against the possible effects of Omega 3 when taken with Clopidogrel after I'd asked him, and my GP prescribed a contraindicated antacid😵.

Sure, do ask a pharmacist, but also do your own research on the Internet, consulting reputable websites.

Having grown to dislike coffee, I thought that I might get to like turmeric tea. Two weeks later, I discovered that it can interfere with iron absorption, which is my top priority at present. Peppermint tea seems OK for me, and my first-ever cup settled an embarrassing stomach before a visitor arrived.

Thank you. The BHF Helpline nurse said she didn't think herbal tea would be a problem but this is all new to me so I am not sure.

I'm trying to drink less caffeine.

less caffeine ….. have you tried Rooibos tea? Has no caffeine.

As far as peppermint goes, my cousin - a pharmacist- advised me to drink this when I was diagnosed with cancer.

Peppermint is something you might eat anyway and within your normal diet, as indeed is turmeric in small doses. What you need to avoid is something like St John’s Wort for help with sleep, taken alongside any medication which is intended to affect your mental health . The two together could be overdosing.

Yes.. when I say "less caffeine" I mean supplementing normal tea with herbal (caffeine free) tea throughout the day.

I haven't tried Roobios but peppermint is a favourite. As is mango.

I thought I'd read that turmeric was to be avoided.

Do you know about sleep tea please?

Sorry don’t know what you mean about sleep tea. Do you mean a tea to help you sleep ? Camomile is I think supposed to help

Not seen that one! Camomile is traditionally used for sleep. Can’t see any reason why you should not use this.

It’s a combination of camomile, passion flower, vanilla and apple. I like the taste

I have been drinking this Sleep Tea ever since it came out- with no problems whatsoever.

I’ve had cardiac arrest and STEMI then stents so on the usual medication. My pharmacist told me that it’s fine . I’m on statins and blood thinners.

It’s a lovely tasting tea and when I have some to a friend who was visiting me and suffers from bad insomnia she said she had her best sleep in ages!

Thank you. I'm suffering really bad night time insomnia because of the meds (I think) so I thought it might help.

I believe chamomile can interact with blood thinners. I know I used to use sleepy teas in the past and used to get bad aide effects. Stomach cramps. Then I read up many tea ingredients can interact with meds in a bad way. Same with booze, I'd use in moderation.

Best sleepy tea by far that I used was a one with Valerian in it. That stuff is pretty good at getting you away and dreaming deep

So avoid chamomile and stick to valerian?

I would say its way stronger and think its safer if on blood thinners
