Pacemaker and skiing.

Hi, I’m going on a skiing holiday with my children and their families. I’ve skied many times before but never since having my pacemaker for heart block fitted. My main concern is going through the lift pass gates onto the lift, has anyone in a similar position had any experience with this and if so was it ok, did they have any effects on their pacemaker?

Hi I have a crt-d implant which is similar to a pace maker but also has a defibrillator.and have no problem whatsoever going through the ski lift pass gates. But have been told if I was worried about going through them explain to the person on the gate, show them your pass and they will let you go around rather than through the gate.

Hi Hanibal, I’ve just replied to you but I’m unsure if I’ve sent it correctly, I apologise if you haven’t received my reply, and I’ll try to resend it, if you didn’t receive it.

Have received a message telling me you have replied. But don’t seem to have had your reply. If that makes sense

Hi Hanibal, sorry about the mix up. Thank you very much for your reassuring message, that you’ve been thru the gates without any problems. I have spoken to some medics but can’t seem to get a straight answer!! Id thought of going round the gate, but as they get so busy I didn’t think I’d get thru🥴!! Thank you once again. 😊

hi, I have had a pacemaker for over10 years. Go skiing regularly and have never had a problem. To be honest, it never even clicked that there could be a problem before reading your post. ⛷️

Hi, thank you for your reply, that’s reassuring that you’ve skied for so long with a pacemaker and no problems with the gates. 😊⛷️

Thanks for asking. I have a permanent pacemaker since February 2000. I have done all kinds of sports without any problem. I think if there is no electric equipment producing magnetic fields, there should be no problem. Going through the gate is more a security issue than medical problem.

Hi nilmonisikidar, thank you for your reply, I think the gates are similar to the shop security ones, it reassuring to have some positive replies. Thanks again

Hi, I’ve just got back from Austria and I’m off again in 2 weeks, been skiing for over 50 years, 7 of them with a PM, don’t have any problems at all, although one of the nurses told me not to hang around the gates for too long and definitely don’t stand in one. I always make sure I can go through quickly, just in case but if you tell the lift attendant that you have one, they let you through the ski school lane. Just let the security at the airports know and they’ll either frisk you or put you though a scanner that won’t affect your PM.

Hi Kimkat, thank you for your message, I apologise for the delay in answering. That’s a good tip about the ski school lane, and reassuring that you’ve skied for 7 yrs with a pacemaker. With all the positive replies I’ve had, I’m now looking forward to being able to ski with my children and grandchildren ⛷️
