statin allergy

Hi there I did a ctca one year ago, and they found that I had 50% blockage in my arteries. It has jumped 20% in my right coronary artery. I was told to Jane satins a year ago. I try but they had bad side-effects. I am trying again now. I tried Lipitor and a half. He gave me headaches. Major stomach aches, and made me very confused. With Crestor I only started at last night the effect is a knife like pain say 6/10 around my bowels for 6 hours. Should I continue with crestor. Has anyone else felt this pain and continued? Does it get better in time?

Not Medical advice, opinions and suggestions only:

Pravastatin has the best side effect profile of any statin. If that doesn't work don't be dismayed, Based on your medical need you should qualify for PCSK 9 inhibitors which are just as good as statins, please insist you have review for them as you are station intolerant, if you cannot tolerate Pravastatin.

If they refuse you PCSK 9 inhibitors and they shouldn't you should appeal, but in case you cant.

Ezetimibe plus Bempedoic acid is similar to statins , different mechanisms though.

If shockingly they wont prescribe Bempedoic acid.

then

Ezetimibe plus fibrate will produce a protection similar to statins, different mechanisms.

Both are cheap and readily available.

For any of the above combinations you can add cholestyramine drink, to go even further.

There are so many choices and drug options now, please do not fret.

This year in 2023 the drug companies had a bumper announcement on new and novel drugs for CAD so there are many good things coming down the pipeline.

I’m sorry to hear about your condition and the issues caused by the medication you have tried.

If you are in the UK do return to your doctor and ask about alternatives until you find the right treatment.

Don’t forget to adjust your lifestyle too if necessary . Get advice and help from an expert if you need to but a healthy, ‘‘Mediterranean style’ diet, plenty of regular appropriate exercise, no alcohol and no smoking will assist the medication. .

Best wishes

if you can’t tolerate statins you might be eligible for Inclisarin injections which have no side effects and work through RNA

hi I too have had problems with statins over the years. I was put on inclisiran injection and again reacted badly. Now back on a low dose statin but have to take anti histamine with it to stop the side effects. I have familial high cholesterol.

I had terrible knee pain with Lipitor. Hard to climb stairs. Docs told me med has side effects and just deal with it. Easy for them to say!!
