Why was I offered a Statin, so simply and so automatically?

Hi group,

Sorry, this may be down to my naiveity but, a couple weeks ago I went and had my annual blood tests and normally I log onto the NHS App a day after to see and check the results. Everything was well and normal apart from my chorlestorol which came back as borderline.

I'm already on medication for High Blood Pressure and when I was diagnosed prior to the first lockdown, I set about completely reversing my then sedatary lifestyle to being more active and fortunately the first lockdown got me into the habit of cooking fresh from home. I also work from home during the week so it's probably been a few years now since I last stared down the meals for one aisle in the Supermarkets.

I missed a call from one of the Doctor as I was in a work meeting, but the next day I got a call from the health centre and the lady I spoke to mentioned the results and straight away offered me a Statin.

At this point I pretty confused as although apart from the odd chippy or few biscuits, etc, I've done everything I can including exercise to keep my blood pressure under control and perhaps naively imagined all those actions would keep everything else under control, so after speaking with my parents, I've come to the conclusion that it's hereditary and I will suffer with it.

However, there was nothing from the lady I spoke to in terms of finding out or talking to me about my lifestyle, looking at how we could confirm that it was hereditary, I basically was offered the Statin and nothing else.

I declined at first thinking this doesn't feel right but again talking to my parents, they said everyone in the family is one thing or another.

I picked up the Statin yesterday and noticed this line in the notes 'Before starting treatment, your Doctor will place you on a low-cholesterol diet'

But no, I've not been requested to attend any follow ups.

I'm tempted to contact the Health Centre to try and understand why it was offered so quickly without anything else or any support.

I guess a longwinded post, but is this normal? Did you get offered a Statin and basically told to crack on and good luck?

Thank you for your thoughts and replies.

Best regards, Darren.

Hello :-)

I can see you posted a while ago now so my reply maybe of no use but I know sometimes and especially if it is hereditary and runs in the family they will put you on statins which in a way is a good thing along with the healthy diet and exercise which sometimes no matter how healthy we eat it does not always get it down as you will no doubt know by now

I wonder if you have taken the statins if you have I hope you have got on with them alright and your Cholesterol levels are good :-)

Take Care :-) x
