I’ve been offered Ezetimibe by my GP’s practice I currently have a Total Cholesterol ratio of 3.27 any thoughts?
Ezetimibe: I’ve been offered Ezetimibe... - British Heart Fou...
Ezetimibe
,Ezetimibe was added to my meds 2 months ago to lower my LDL.
My total Cholesterol was 3.8, Cholesterol Ratio 2.7 and LDL 1.9 on 80mg Atorvastin. I have 2 stents and the current guidelines are LDL < 1.8 for secondary prevention (If you already have coronary heart disease - MI, Stents or Bypass surgery)
I’m on this too, alongside 80mg Atorvastatin. I was prescribed it as the statin alone wasn’t reducing my LDL to the target of 1.4. It hasn’t helped as much as I thought it might as my LDL is currently 2.6.
I haven't noticed any side effects since adding it.
I take this alongside 80 mgs Atorvastatin. My Cholesterol was okay before this was prescribed but I had a bypass in 2017 then 2 stents in 2021 and my arteries were furred so they added this.I'm due for a blood test in December so I'm going to ask if I can come off it.
I have no side effects but I'd like to cut down on the meds.
Yes, 10 mg added to 80 mg atorvastatin. There's a combination pill that I take, which oddly is smaller than the 80 mg ator alone, if that helps. So it's not an extra pill at least.
My LDL cholesterol is quite low but I have the Lipoprotein A genetic marker which also means that my HDL is rather low, too. So my cardiologist is trying to get the LDL to rock bottom levels to improve the ratio.
hello pasigal I am intrigued by your comment > I have the Lipoprotein A genetic marker which also means that my HDL is rather low, too as I also have this marker and stubbornly low HDL but have never been told or read that the two are associated. Thanks for sharing, may I please ask how you know of the association.?
Kind regards
Ray
This is what my cardiologist told me. She says that there is an association between high LP(a) and lower HDL. My brother has the same profile as I do -- high LP(a) and low HDL.
For reference, my total cholesterol is 2.05 mmol/l (.79 g/l or 79 mg/dl).
My HDL is .80 mmol/l (.31 g/l), and my LDL is .87 mmol/l (.34 g/l or 34 mg/dl)
My HDL "target" is more than 1.04 mmol/l or .40 g/l, so I am well under the ideal level for HDL, although my LDL is really low. The ratio is quite important, as well as the absolute levels.
Ezetimibe was added to my statin 6 months ago. No side effects but my Cholesterol levels have dropped dramatically, doctors are really pleased. Statin alone wasn’t enough.
I take Ezetimibe as cannot take statins, it increases the levels and occurrences of my IBS unfortunately so I have had to reduce it to every other day.
Same as Survivor1952. Atorvastatin 80 mg. No side-effects. Dramatic drop of LDL (from 2.1 to 1.0). HDL stayed at a sound 1.4.
Ezetimibe was added to my meds recently because I have an intolerance to statins. In December when I have a blood test I will find out if it’s worked. My cholesterol isn’t that high overall either. But as part of my cocktail of heart failure medication I need to have a med to lower my cholesterol even more. It’s also used along with statins in some cases. They want it down to 1. it’s so weird that’s like a body with no cholesterol, I wonder if that’s even possible.
Deejay it’s confusing I’ve read so much about the over emphasis on cholesterol and professionals seem to be divided!
I’m confused also. I don’t even understand the good and bad cholesterol. The doctors have been trying to get me on it again for and I’ve been resisting because of the pain I suffered with my last statin. Then they found ezetimibe after explanation I decided to try it. I don’t seem to get excessive pain with it like the statins, so far.
After hubby's stroke 2 years ago the dr stopped Atorastatin and put him on this medication. He's had no side effects.
