Myocarditis - new here

Hello,

I’m glad I’ve found this chat as I feel pretty isolated with this new condition.

My story sounds like some I’ve read on here: I spent a week in hospital 7 weeks ago following a very painful episode of heartburn - which turned out to be my stomach but a blood test revealed high troponins. Since then, I spent 5 weeks feeling miserable and the last two feeling a bit better (but still next to no effort) - except tonight when my blood pressure raised again to 18/10 and ive had chest pain. Off sick since released from hospital and been 3 times to AE… including tonight and I’m writing from the hospital while waiting for the EKG and blood test results.

I live alone with my kids aged 9 and 19 and all this has been very difficult to deal with for the three of us, even if I have a couple of friends to check on me every now and then.

i have a healthy lifestyle and used to be a dynamic 48 year old woman until the 26th of September.

i still have an MRI scheduled in two days. Apart from that i was just given meds for a few days only and almost no advice/explanation (I’m in France). I feel confused and down, with days better than others. I just need support and hope…

I also have a question about the eMRI as I’m a bit nervous. Do we feel anything?

Thanks for welcoming me 🙂

What a lot you are going through. Many of us will recognise the level of anxiety about your future, especially when you have such family responsibilities.

As time goes on you will begin to recognise better what are signs you need to take notice of and get help, and what you can manage yourself. Not an exact science, for me! But I do now have a better sense of whats urgent etc. I had to learn to recognise angina symptoms from anxiety…..and dealt with each differently.

Do keep posting. Many of us have been through these early, very frightening stages and most have adapted and come through….now living a different, but rewarding new life.

Were here to help you.

Hello, I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you are having a cosy morning.Your story is a bit relatable as my doctor suspected that I had had a viral myocarditis during my hospital stay last winter. I have possible stress cardiomyopathy.

Also, I have an aneurysm in the neck, therefore I had MRI scans once two years. I love a healthy lifestyle and vegetables.

At least it is good that we can reach out to this supportive community. 🙂 Please stay encouraged and be gentle to yourself 🧡

For me, seeing paintings and art on Google Arts and culture app can give me positive thoughts a bit. Google AI can create poems for me.

I hope that you will find small joy in your everyday life to restore your fitness✨

Thank you for letting me share 😊

May your days be brighter and peaceful 🌸

Hi, so sorry you are going through this at the mo. I had acute myocarditis with pericarditis 6 years ago. It is an illness that takes time to recover from.

Generally on here we all recommend REST REST & then guess what? More REST!

Your heart has been through wuite an ordeal but unfortunately there is no 'fix' like a stent to help you on your way. Like any pulled muscle, your heart needs to rest to heal itself & recover.

The MRI shouldn't hurt. It is very loud but they will talk to you all the time, giving instructions of what to do eg hold breath, stay still etc and will keep checking you are ok.

When back home its important you completely rest, if you have friends & family who could could meals accept the offer or order some ready meals online for a while. If someone can take your 9yr old to & from school for you for a few weeks, stet it up and accept the help. You will have good days when you feel better but PLEASE don't be tempted to do too much as you will pay for it! In the early days one step forward can lead to a week back!

Caution is the best medicine for a smooth recovery & healthy heart 🙂❤️ Be kind to yourself, be reasurred it can be a slow recovery but this can make it a very good recovery 💪🏽

Your children will also be reassured by seeing you rest and slowly & steadily improving 👍🏽 Take care.

Thank you again. Yes, my 19 yr old daughter is helping and her little 9 yr old brother is also learning to take more care of himself and to avoid making me repeat things. Thankfully, he can walk to school so that helps.

About what you say about over exertion… I wonder what happened week 3 in, I had started going for walks for a few days and was breathing fine. Then felt tired and here I am. The doctor at the hospital had told me to avoid sports not walks. I’m scared now I might have caused damage. 😕

HHH2017 in reply toHealing_Heart

Unlikely you have done any damage as such but too much too soon can just set you back a bit. We've nearly all done it so you aren't alone. We get a day we feel better and think ooh thats it Im ok, then over do it - hence one step forward & 3 back!!!

Glad you've got such lovely familysupport 🥰 scary for uour children too. Drs don't see many cases of myocarditis so don't know a huge amount about it sadly.

You can ring the BHF nurses on this forum, they are really helpful & Im sure can reassure you & offer further advice.

In terms of return yo work, do ask for an occupational health assessment - usuaslly v supportive- and a phased return. Wishing you a steady recovery from now on in.

I’m thinking about going back to work part-time in December, as I work from home. It will depend on what the cardiologist says on the 4/12, and whether or not I have any appointments. I’m thinking maybe physio? Like exercise or breathing rehab sessions?

Thank you so much for your replies!

So last night, the EKG and blood test came back normal. So the doctor said the pain was muscular.

I am resting as much as possible, I hardly ever leave my house. My sickness leave ends in December but I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back to work.

Especially that 1 week after the hospital (5 weeks ago) I was recovering really fast and started going for walks (1 or 2 km), but after a few days I started feeling worse. Doctors had told me to “avoid sports” and I didn’t think walking (slowly) would be too much 🫤.

Sorry to hear you are going through this very difficult and stressful time. It sounds like the ECG and bloods are reassuring and once you have the MRI results you should know definitively, I believe, whether the myocardium or /and pericardium are involved. This will then guide your recovery. I have pericarditis, diagnosed by MRI, which also ruled out myocarditis. I know I need to rest as much as possible and if I don’t it feels worse. So, in essence, it’s good you’re having an MRI (it’s painless) to have a diagnosis and then a plan which hopefully will ease some of the stress of the unknown. Take care and all the best.

Hang in there. It sounds like you have had alot on your plate, and ya need to renew your "dynamic" pass. But that can wait. Now, seems to be time for "updating"? yourself, even possibly "upgrading"? Just Breath!Nice deep slow breaths. The MRI sooo easy.,ya lie still. There will be some cllicking sounds, the machine tacking pictures. For it to be succesfull, you not move. I just close my eyes and go to my "happy place". but the whole things over with too fast. Being in the hospital is where ya should be. Remember, theres more than likely severel Dr's looking at your tests. Your in a good place. Your part in all of this?.... Is working at lowering your stress .Just Breath! You've got this! Be Well 🥰

Whoops this is for Healing Heart

Hi again, I had my MRI done this morning. I was asked to hold my breath for about 10 seconds multiple times, but apart from that it went ok. Now I’ll have to wait until the 4/12 to see the cardiologist. I didn’t dare look at the MRI results 🙄.

MRI is a great diagnostic tool so hopefully you will get reassuring news and can start to feel less anxious (which it 100% natural)

The Dr is right pain it is likely to be muscular - stating the obvious really - your heart is a vital muscle and it needs time to recover! Hopefully he/she will learn from you & give better advice in future 🤞🏽

Swelling/enlargement can take time to go down, the MRI will identify this but Im sure its all going in the right direction. You came out of hospital quite quickly (I was nearly 3 weeks) so still early days in your journey. Do keep posting questions 👍🏽 and have a chat with BHF nurses.

hi there, I have been back at home now for 3 weeks, like you feel alone and not sure where to go for advice now I have been discharged from hospital ! 😞

Hi! How long did you stay in hospital for?

I was un hospital for a week.

Oh wow, just like me then. What happened? How are you feeling today?

I was going to bed and felt an ache in my central upper back and shoulders. Went to sleep. Next morning got up and started work from home. Started getting chest pains and a tingle in my left arm and hand. The hospital took bloods to test for traponin. They thought I may have had a mild heart attack ! After angio and MRI myocarditis was diagnosed. I admit to wanting to get home, and can’t say how wonderful the staff in the hospital were. Now still struggling with tiredness, and concerned about ongoing pains in chest. Spoke to GP yesterday and it’s to be expected, no further guidance given! Having blood tests for liver function on Thursday due to medications. Just so lost 😞

oh and advised to take my own blood pressure readings !

what happened to you ?

Healing_Heart profile image
Healing_Heart in reply toConcernedaboutthings

I know how worrying these pains in the chest can be, I’m sorry you’re still having those. How’s your breathing?

In my case, I had terrible heartburn at night so went to GP the next day who sent me to hospital. Since then, after feeling almost back to normal after the hospital, my state got somewhat worse with asthma like symptoms and I’m unable to make any efforts, not even walk outside my home. It’s very distressing and it feels long, and little to no guidance from docs.

Concernedaboutthings in reply toHealing_Heart

so sorry to hear that! My breathing is generally not too bad. And yes such a lack of guidance ! Talking of heartburn, I have not suffered with indigestion before, but since my medication I am suffering a little with that too.
