At breakfast, I gulped down a very hot cup of tea. Inevitably, it began to scald my oesophagus and cause a searing burning sensation. I clutched my chest without thinking and I may have emitted a high-pitched howling sound.

On reflection, this reflex response probably wasn't the wisest for my nearest and dearest who have been through the mills on my recent cardiac journey. I spent a good half hour scraping them off the ceiling. 🤦‍♂️

Have you ever fallen foul of something similar or am I alone in my inability to handle hot beverages?

I can’t have hot beverages. Since my diagnosis of vasospastic angina after my heart attack last year, I actually find that hot beverages trigger my angina. I might be unique in this situation though as it’s not something that I’ve seen others post about. I’m not sure if there is a link between hot beverages and angina, but I try to drink beverages at room temperature where possible.

All the best.

I can't drink hot tea either! It doesn't trigger my coronary vasospasms though, eating a large meal does.

Have you had any tests to rule out oesophageal spasms? The symptoms can be very similar to angina.

GTN spray and calcium channel blockers relieve oesophageal spasms too as they act on any smooth muscle.

I hope you don't have both at the sametime.

Wow, I've not heard of this. Thank you for sharing and I'll be interested to see if anyone else has a similar experience to you.

I am being treated by my GP for suspected oesophageal spasms currently, with MilkFairy referring to this above. This may have a role to play in not being able to tolerate hot beverages. Hopefully others come by with their experiences too!

I drink everything warm never hot but never thought to connect that to any health issues, interesting

I hadn't thought to link hot drinks to any health issues either. My original post was a self-put down at my stupidity of clutching my chest and panicking my relatives, whereas in fact, all I'd done was scald myself internally. However, my post has triggered some unexpected, interesting and thought-provoking responses. It never fails to amazing me the range of experiences people have relating to heart conditions. I feel like a sponge soaking up all this new information!
