Heart Rate Average Increased During Exercise

Hi,

I had two stents around this time 2 years ago. Since then I have increased my exercise and walk typically 5 times a week, which I have built up to a pace of a KM in about 7 minutes doing just over 5K each of those days. Around 3 months ago my GP took me off my beta blockers, as my resting heart rate was dropping into the 30's. I was on the lowest dose as my resting heart rate is naturally low. As expected after coming off the beta blockers I saw my exercise heart rise but then it steadied at around averaging between 135 - 142.

In the last week I have seen the average rate jump up to 142 - 149 (the max is not much higher low 150's). Also my apple watch/iphone is reporting my VO2 Max has dropped. My resting heart rate average is also up around 4 bpm more than normal.

Should I be concerned or is it possible I have a virus or something similar? I have a few mornings this week woken up a little dizzy/light headed.

Thanks in advance!

I would ring the Gp, it's best to get checked over when new symptoms arise, I also think the fact you're not long after stopping the beta blocker may have something to do with it.

Thanks. I will see how this week goes, I have a feeling I have a virus at the moment, so expect it is probably that but will monitor and if it does not improve go to the GP. Also due a cardiologist appointment in a couple of months.

I’m sorry I can’t give any advice , I’m just over 2 months post quadruple bypas following nstemi heart attack and I’m rehabbing similar to you but slower (usually have a Lurcher/deerhound that’s wants to stop and sniff 🤦🏼🤣) . I’m very interested in how you get on, it’s a little glimpse into the future for me. My meds are still being tweaked . I noticed when my Bisoprolol was reduced from 3.5 to 1.5 thst my heart rate and BP began to rise, so I’m on 2.5 and and back to resting high 40s - low 50s (garmin) and BP low normal, VO2 max getting better (showing age 39 from 46 .. makes me giggle as I’m 61🤣).

I really want to up my training , the rehab program is way to easy, I’m scoring 0-2 on the Borg scale .

Please keep us updated on your situation 👍

I too have a Lurcher, but cannot use walking him as exercise as he stops to sniff everything and has slowed down a lot recently as he is pretty close to 11. Our first Lurcher, absolutely lovely dogs.

Coming off the Bisoprolol I was expecting my heart rate to rise, but I thought it had settled after a couple of months off the Bisoprolol, for whatever reason it has risen slightly with exercise over the last week. I think I probably have a virus or something and this why, but shall monitor and if it does not approve go and see my GP as recommended by Weetabixie above, I also have cardiologist appoint due in a couple of months.

Take it slow and steady with your recovery, you have had a lot more done than me, and it has taken me time to build up to where I am today. I found the rehab sessions really helpful in building confidence, especially with the nurses commenting on the intensity I was working at.

All the best for the future

Are you sure it's not your watch.Try checking it against a manual check.

Thanks. I have recalibrated today so will see if that makes a difference. There have been software updates recently

Seven minute Kilometres is a good pace 👍 I should imagine you're pretty much slow jogging?

Not too far off jogging, but still walking. I have to do a fast pace walk as I hate running!

That’s a really good pace! The average Park Run time for 5k is about 34 mins and so you are within a minute of that! Not sure my legs are long enough to do that pace without running/jogging😀😀. I’ve tried a few different smart watches, and when compared with a chest warn monitor, they can be a bit unreliable when monitoring heart rate while exercising.
