High Heart Hormones

Can anyone fill me in on what these actually mean? I have a history of AF/Tachy. I am back in AF now and have been since beg March. Still awaiting to speak with my cardiologist. As an asthmatic, I got my peak flow checked and my GP ran BNP test. I have high heart hormones but tbh .. I have no idea what that actually means. Can anyone alleviate my anxiety over this?

A-NAP BNP , and N-BNP are the cardiac hormones that are tested for and can be a really useful diagnostic tool on assessing changes in heart function as well as helping doctors to assess if you need a change in dose or medications used to improve your heart function. If your heart is having a increased load of flow or increasing in the stretch in the walls cardiac hormones are activated to help to reduce the problem. So an increase in hormones levels in a BNP test help to prove that your heart is having to work harder to function well and that cardiac function is under stress. It can indicate the need for action to reduce future risks and to prevent symptoms and things like AF getting worse.

Unfortunately, a BNP test on its own cannot establish the root cause for the increase in symptoms , or which specific chronic condition you have that is causing it. Both cardiac and pulmonary problems like asthma can cause the heart to need to work harder.

If they were my results I would probably contact the GP and ask them to send the results through to the Cardiologist remind them that you have been referred to them but are still waiting for an appointment and to ask for them to organise to see you as soon as possible , as well as asking them if they provide some advice about changing your dose in your medications to help in the period that you are waiting to be seen.

Take it easy and pace yourself well, if you have breathing techniques that you use to improve your breathing for asthma this will also help relieve the daily symptoms if oxygen flow is also effecting your heart.
