Calling Type 1 Diabetics

Due to have my bypass in 2 days just wondering if there are any other type 1 diabetics who have had the surgery with stories to share. I have had some wonderful responses to my plea for help with feeling anxious but would love to hear from anyone else with this blessed disease 😃

Hi MotherPeach, I mentioned this in a reply to you a short while ago, before I saw this post. I am T1 of 40 years and had CABG x 4 2 years ago and all was fine. They take over the management of your insulin during the surgery and continue to monitor you. Even though they were happy to administer my insulin afterwards they were very happy to let me do it myself. I had my libre 2 sensor which was great. I ate a little and often and had plenty of fluids. If my sugars dipped due to the meds I had orange juice and if they went a bit on the high side I took more insulin. The staff are brilliant are on hand with any problems. One thing I did find out that even for people who are not diabetic, due to the fact that sugar levels can raise during any surgery they have insulin available. One of the surgeons told me that, quite fascinating. Please do try and relax, I know easier said than done, but there are so many staff available to take care of you. My blood sugar levels did not go haywire throughout my stay and I was very sensible in terms of eating. I can remember there being 4 ladies in a ward all waiting on CABG and one of the ladies had a visitor who used to sneak in cheese and crackers which I thought was funny. She used to say that she was just waiting for them to bring in some red wine! Not sure they ever did, but some lovely memories from a difficult time, makes me laugh even today! Take good care you will be on the road to recovery in no time. Judi 🤗
