Co codamol/ codeine. Is this okay for heart patients for temp pain relief?

theonethatgotaway1 profile image

Pretty bad back pain. Anybody know if Codeine is fine for the majority of heart patients and the meds we all use?

I used it as a sleep aid years ago. I have Afib plus other heart issues. My GP said it is ok.But maybe wait and see what others say.

I was given Codeine during an A&E visit and they were aware of my heart history. However, I did have some awful side effects to it. I would recommend you are sitting down or lying down if you decide to take it. I remember my BP completely plummeting on it.

Safest option is to call 111 and speak to a pharmacist.

All the best.

Hello :-)

I used to take these a lot before my heart events and now the cocktail of meds I am on and have not used them since

If it were me though no matter whether anyone else has taken them I would just either give your Doctors a ring or pharmacist to ask them if they feel you will be ok no doubt you possibly will be but always good to check

I am sorry you are in pain though as there is nothing worse to try and deal with :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

I was prescribed these while on beta blockers - don't tend to take them though as it gives awful constipation.

I'd give 111 a call to be safe, or if you can wait, speak to a pharmacist tomorrow.

I take these painkillers paracetamol +8 mg codeine to stop any bowel issues I eat one kiwi fruit every day don't eat too many though as they may give you the opposite problem

Mine are prescription strength so not sure a kiwi would help lol... but it's quite a delicate balance to strike isn't it

We have more or less the same health issues and medication cocktail. I was giving codeine in icu after having a central line fitted. However as others have said, they made me feel absolutely terrible so in the end I just put up with the fact I felt like I’d just had a garden fork stuck in my neck!!

The 1s that can be bought over the counter are nowhere near the strength given in hospital though

Definitely call 111, easiest way to check.

I'd echo to call and check as nobody on the forum can give qualified pharmaceutical support ... But, I'm prescribed paracetamol or codine at regular doses,

I'm aware codine can drop your HR slightly so always best to check

Codine can only be taken for 3 days. It is a great painkiller but very addictive if you are not careful. Also can cause constipation which can add to your back pain. I am very careful with codine.

Codine can be used for longer than 3 days if advised by a medical practitioner

I have been prescribed .Co-codamol for knee pain, whilst waiting for knee replacement. Take as few as possible. I am on aspirin, amlodipine, statins and at the moment clopidogrel.

Always check with a medical professional first, as we are all different and react to medication in our own individual way.I have been taking co-codamol 30/500 for many years because of chronic pain that can't be fixed. I really wish that they had told me the drawbacks before they were prescribed, but they didn't even when I asked. I'm unfortunate because there are many meds that I react badly to so my options are limited. May I suggest that you push to find out the cause of your pain, and see if it can be treated another way

Best of lucj.

I’ve been on co-codomal for years because of my back. I only take the lesser dose you can buy in the chemist. The higher dose sets my arrhythmias off and prevents me going properly. I still get pains but not as bad as if I take paracetamol. I get mine prescribed along with gabapentin for nerve damage, which I ended up with after I fell and dislocated my shoulder.

The GP throws the highest dose at me like sweets 🙈🙈. I don’t take them as prescribed. I’ve a degenerative scoliosis and degenerative arthritis mainly of the spine. I never take them in the day. I use heat belts or patches and magnesium oil rub. Exercise like swimming and Pilates helps. When I do take them I’ve bought a pill cutter so I can take half a tablet with half or 1 paracetamol. But my gp is wrongly very free with them. X

Hello, I too have a bad back at the moment (bulging disc) which has left me unable to walk. Seeing a physio this week but in the meantime I have been prescribed Amitriptyline. Side effects state don’t give to patients who have had a recent HA (mine was last Oct) but I’m trusting that because they’re temporary and not for the long haul, they will help rather than hinder. Everyone is different so please speak to a pharmacist or your GP but don’t suffer, it’s just awful pain isn’t it - good luck ❤️🧚🏼‍♀️

Hi I have been prescribed 30/500 for years, I have athritis, I try not to take them during the day in case it impairs my driving but I find them very good for pain, my cardiologist is fine with it. If your GP has prescribed it he will know your heart history but it's probably worth mentioning it to him just in case. Mine actually prescribed brufen which is a big no no and I had presumed they knew that, char.

My mother was on Co-Codamol for back trouble after a fall at age 71 until she died. She was also on Lisinopril for high blood pressure from about the age of 69. She died aged 97 and 3 months from old age.

Im on beta blocker and prescribed codeine for pain. But every case is different so do check with pharmacist or GP. Hope your back is better soon.

Yes I take paracetamol and codeine. It is worth discussing with doctor. First. If you are on blood pressure medication ibuprofen is not recommended. But they do not recommend to take paracetamol and codeine for more than three days. However I remember the old days when you could buy 100 boots paracetamol and codeine for 99p.
